Wali-e-Kamil Barshiyan-Buzurg Arif Billah Hazrat Maulana Akbar ʿAlī (Bengali: আকবর আলী) was a Bengali Islamic scholar. He was imam of Dargah-e-Hazrat Shah Jalal Masjid in Sylhet for 58 years and also led prayers at the Masjid-e-Satta of Darul Uloom Deoband.

Early life and education[edit]

Akbar Ali was born in 1916 to a middle-class Bengali Muslim family in the village of Matizura Tuka (now Islamnagar) in Beanibazar, Sylhet District. He was the eldest of the four sons and one daughter of Janab Abbas Ali and Zahura Bibi. His mother died when he was six months old and so he was raised by his father and his maternal uncle Mamtaz Ali.

Akbar Ali began his education under the imam of Matizura Masjid. He completed his hifdh independently under Hafiz Mu'tasim Billah. When he turned six years in 1922, he was sent to Mathiura Madrasah. In 1932, he enrolled at the Sylhet Govt. Alia Madrasah where he completed his further Islamic education. During the first six months in Sylhet, he lodged at the home of Tuti Miah in Dakshin Surma. After that, he lived for two and a half years at the home of Hafiz Abdun Noor of Sachna in Kuarpar, Sylhet. After passing his fazil certification, his teacher Muhammad Sahool Usmani instructed him to go to Deoband. Akbar Ali then set off for India, and stopped in Muradabad for one month. He then went to Raipur, where he studied in madrasah for six months. However, his mind could not settle in Raipur, so he continued on to Darul Uloom Deoband, reaching there in 1939. He spent one year studying tafseer and the next year studying hadith. He sometimes led prayers at the Masjid-e-Satta of Darul Uloom Deoband.

Career[edit]

His career began as an Islamic studies teacher at Asirkhal Madrasah, Beanibazar. 6 months before the Partition (1947), the Congress and Muslim League followers clashed in Nayasarak, Sylhet and demanded that a new imam be appointed for the Dargah-e-Hazrat Shah Jalal Masjid. Under Muhammad Sahool Usmani's suggestion, Akbar Ali became the imam of Dargah-e-Hazrat Shah Jalal Masjid in Sylhet for 58 years onwards until his death. He used to be based in the south of the dargah in Mufti Bari, where he also used to teach. From there, is the start of Madrasa-e-Talim-ul-Quran (now Jamia Qasimul Uloom Dargah-e-Hazrat Shah Jalal Madrasah).

Death[edit]

Akbar Ali died at 11pm on Tuesday 8 November 2005 in PG Hospital (Bangabandhu Medical University) in Dhaka.
