Heartbreaker is a song by American singer Michael Jackson from his tenth and final studio album Invincible (2001). The song contains a rap performed by Fats.

Background[edit]

"Heartbreaker" was recorded by Michael Jackson for his studio album, Invincible (2001). The song was co-written and composed by Michael Jackson with Rodney Jerkins, Fred Jerkins III, LaShawn Daniels, Mischke and Norman Gregg, and produced by Jackson and Jerkins.[1] The song deals with a femme fatale, a theme Jackson used more often. The lyrics tell how the singer is being emotionally tortured by a gorgeous woman.[3]

Composition[edit]

Opinions differ about the originality of the composition, mainly the rhythm pattern. Some qualify it as directly inspired by the work of producer Timbaland, refering to characteristics like the bass drum at the start of each measure,[3] making the song sound somewhat outdated for a 2001 composition. Others recognize influences of dubstep in the sound pattern. Dubstep originated in the early 2000s, which would imply Jackson and Jerkins were ahead of the curve. Producer Rodney Jerkins himself described "Heartbreaker" as a dubstep song in an interview in Pensado's Place (episode #114): "We were doing dubstep, back then. And didn't even know what we were doing. If you listen to it now, you'd be like: wow, that's dubstep. We were doing that, then. We were just trying things, not even knowing."[4]
