Formerly called
Douglas County REACT, Heartland REACT

Heartland READY was founded in 2022 as the successor to Heartland REACT, the Omaha area chapter of REACT International. Because the goals of REACT International and Heartland REACT no longer aligned, in 2021 by membership vote, a decision was made to separate from REACT International and to form a new organization.[1]

Purpose[edit]

Heartland READY provides communications in the event of severe weather. With over 70 trained storm spotters that rapidly deploy and provide visual reports of weather events and property damage to the National Weather Service and the Douglas County and Sarpy County Emergency Management Agencies.[2]

In the event of special events as determined by local law enforcement, Heartland READY can be called upon as first responders by the Omaha Police Department and Douglas County Sheriff for missing children searches, missing endangered adults, amber alerts, and similar emergencies. Douglas County Emergency Management can also call upon Heartland READY for special assignments as needed.

Heartland READY provides free communications services for various events such a parades, bike rides, and walks/runs in order to ensure the safety of those participating in such events.

Events[edit]

Communications have been provided for multiple events each year. Some of the past and future events include:

  • Engineers Without Boarders
  • Omaha Duathlon
  • 7 Lakes Marathon
  • NE Science Festival
  • Omaha Women's Triathlon
  • Flanagan Lake Triathlon
  • O.W.L. Ride
  • Omaha Triathlon
  • A.F.S.P. Suicide Prevention Walk
  • Black Squirrel Triathlon
  • Heartland Marathon
  • Florence Days Parade
  • Halloween Patrol
  • N.A.M.I. Walk
  • Omaha Metro Heart Walk

Communications Methods[edit]

Heartland REACT converted from GMRS in 2010 to the Amateur Radio service. In 2020, Heartland REACT began moving to Digital Mobile Radio communications using Motorola DMR repeaters on amateur frequencies 442.950 MHz and 443.975 MHz. In 2021, all analog communications were abandoned and Heartland REACT began using DMR only due to the added clarity and efficiencies. Today, Heartland READY uses DMR, cellular communications, and cloud-based digital chat channels to provide voice, data and visual communications within the team and to the organizations it serves.

More information about the history of the radio communications used by Heartland READY can be found on the Heartland REACT Wiki.
