Mark Tomlinson is a South African professor and clinical psychologist. He is the Founding Co-Director of the Institute for Life Course Health Research in the Department of Global Health within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Stellenbosch University.[1] He is also Professor of Maternal and Child Health in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Queen's University Belfast. [2]

Research interests[edit]

His scholarly work has involved a diverse range of topics such as improving early childhood development, mental health, adolescent health, and on life course approaches to build human capital in the first two decades of life. His research also focuses on the implementation, effectiveness, and scale-up of programmes that improve child and family wellbeing and mental health outcomes in low- and middle-income countries. He is increasingly interested in climate breakdown.

Education and career summary[edit]

Tomlinson completed his undergraduate degree at Rhodes University, Grahamstown in South Africa. He followed this by completing his Honours Degree in Applied Psychology at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg in 1987. Following this he worked in the Youth and Child Care field working at the Oranjia Jewish Child and Youth Centre for a total of 8 years, serving as Deputy Director for two of those years. He then completed his Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology at University of Cape Town. Instead of becoming a child psychotherapist (which was his aim) he instead became entranced with infant attachment research and, as they say, the rest is history. From this interest he went on to complete his PhD in Child Development at the University of Reading in the UK. For a number of years he was a Principal Scientist at the University of Cape Town followed by three years as a Senior Specialist Scientist in the Health Systems Research Unit at the South African Medical Research Council. He moved to the Department of Psychology at Stellenbosch University in 2008. He has been a full Professor since 2011 and in 2019 left the Department of Psychology to establish (with Prof Sarah Skeen) the Institute for Life Course Health Research in the Department of Global Health, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Stellenbosch University, Cape Town. He has also been a Visiting Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health at the University of Cape Town, South Africa.

Publications[edit]

He has published over 350 peer-reviewed scholarly articles papers in peer-reviewed journals, edited two books and published numerous chapters. [3] [4] He holds an h-index of 74, an i10-index of 242 and has over 20 000 citations. [4]

Professional interests[edit]

He was one of the co-ordinating writers of the World Health Organization document – “Nurturing Care for Early Childhood Development”. [5] He is currently a member of the World Health Organization (WHO) Strategic and Technical Advisory Group of Experts (STAGE) for Maternal, Newborn, Child, Adolescent Health & Nutrition. [6] He is on the Editorial Board of PLoS Medicine[7]; is an Associate Editor of Infant Mental Health Journal[8]; on the Editorial Board of Adversity and Resilience Science: Journal of Research and Practice [9]; and is also on the Editorial Board of Psychology, Health and Medicine [10].
