Heo Baek-ryeon (Korean: 허백련; November 2, 1891 – February 15, 1977), better known by his pen name Uijae (의재), was a renowned South Korean painter and calligrapher. He is considered the last master of the traditional Southern School (Namjong-hwa) of Korean painting. He spent most of his later life in Gwangju, cultivating tea and promoting agricultural education alongside his artistic pursuits.
Early life and education
Heo was born in Jindo County, South Jeolla Province. He initially went to Japan to study law at Meiji University but shifted his focus to art, studying under Japanese masters. In 1974, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Philosophy from Chonnam National University in recognition of his lifelong dedication to Korean arts and the "Sam-ae" (Three Loves) spirit.[1]
Career and Art
After returning to Korea, Heo settled in Mudeungsan mountain in Gwangju after the Korean War. He revived the traditions of the Southern School of painting, which emphasizes spiritual depth and landscapes over realistic depiction.
He founded the Sam-ae Hagwon (Sam-ae Technical School) to teach agriculture to young people, advocating the philosophy of "Love Heaven, Love Earth, and Love People." The Uijae Museum of Korean Art in Gwangju is dedicated to his works and legacy.[2]
In 1973, he received the prestigious Order of Cultural Merit from the South Korean government.
