Kim Bong-ho (Hangul: 김봉호; born 1933) is a South Korean politician. He served as a five-term member of the National Assembly (10th, 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th) and was the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly during the latter half of the 15th legislature.
Early life and education
Kim was born in 1933 in Haenam County, Jeollanam-do. He graduated from Haenam High School and received a bachelor's degree in Agriculture from Chonnam National University. He later earned master's degrees in Business Administration and Economics from Yonsei University. He also holds honorary doctorate degrees in Political Science from Chonnam National University and Cheongju University.
Before entering politics, he operated a rice mill, earning him the nickname "Rice Bong-ho" (Ssal Bong-ho).
Political career
Early career
Kim entered politics as a delegate to the National Council for Unification under the Yushin Constitution. In the 1978 legislative election (10th Assembly), he was elected as a candidate for the ruling Democratic Republican Party.
However, in 1980, following the rise of Chun Doo-hwan's military junta, he was banned from political activities. The ban was lifted in 1984.
Opposition leader
In the 1985 legislative election, he ran as a candidate for the minor "New Socialist Party" and was elected. Shortly after, he defected to the New Korea and Democratic Party (NKDP) and joined the Donggyo-dong faction led by Kim Dae-jung.
Following the democratic transition in 1987, he played a key role in the major opposition parties led by Kim Dae-jung, including the Party for Peace and Democracy, the Democratic Party, and the National Congress for New Politics. He served as the Secretary-General for both the Party for Peace and Democracy and the Democratic Party.
In 1997, he contributed to the formation of the "DJP Alliance" (a coalition between Kim Dae-jung and Kim Jong-pil) by leveraging his background in the Democratic Republican Party and his clan ties (Gimhae Kim clan). From 1998 to 2000, he served as the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly.
He retired from politics after losing the 2000 legislative election to independent candidate Lee Jeong-il by a margin of approximately 2,000 votes.
Personal life
Family
Kim's second son is Kim Young-kyun, a businessman. Kim Young-kyun was the husband of the late actress Jang Jin-young. Although Kim Bong-ho initially opposed their marriage, he mourned her deeply upon her death in 2009, visiting her memorial altar personally.
Controversies
In 2016, a controversy arose when his son, Kim Young-kyun, failed to receive the nomination for the People's Party in the 20th general election. Kim Bong-ho reportedly visited the party's closed supreme council meeting to protest the decision and caused a disturbance, which included physically confronting Supreme Council member Park Joo-sun with documents. He was removed from the venue by party officials.[1]
