History of rugby union matches between Japan and the United States

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Japan and the United States share a tight rivalry. On both teams' record, they hold some of the most matches played against one another. Beginning in 1985, their most recent meeting was in 2019 at the Pacific Nations Cup in Fiji. Japan won 34–20. Originally the fixture was heavily dominated by the United States throughout their now twenty-plus meetings. So much so that it wasn't until their seventh match that Japan won against the United States. However since the year 2000, Japan have made a steady comeback, winning seven of their eleven encounters.

The two teams have met at three World Cup's (1987, 2003, 2015), United States leading 2–1. Since Japan was announced as a tier-one nation in 2020, the teams have yet to play.

The United States leads the rivalry 13–10.
