The Brazilian Institute of Social and Economic Analysis (Ibase) is an active citizenship organization, founded in 1981 by sociologist Herbert de Souza, Betinho, and economists Carlos Afonso and Marcos Arruda. The three were political exiles during the military dictatorship.

It is a non-profit institution, without religious and non-partisan ties. Its vision and motivation are:

  • The ethical principles and values ​​of democracy and the sustainability of life and the planet;
  • Equality, rights and social emancipation for all; and
  • The promotion of socio-environmental justice and sustainable territories.

It is organized in the following areas of incidence (AI):

  • Brazil, geopolitical changes and challenges for citizenship;
  • Cities, territories, socio-environmental justice and citizenship;
  • Democracy, public debate and political reform;
  • Dispute for another development; and
  • Universalization of public policies and rights.

He currently publishes the four-monthly magazine Trincheiras, whose aim is to promote reflection and debate on topics related to citizenship, democracy, sustainability and socio-environmental justice. In addition to this magazine, it maintains the Ibase Channel, a news site whose objective is to produce reports, reports and analyzes made by the Ibase team and other individuals and organizations.

Ibase is part of the Brazilian internet history for having created Alternex, the first internet access provider in Brazil. He also organized the Hunger Campaign, which would become an independent organization, the Citizenship Action against Hunger, Misery and for Life. It is supported by international NGOs (Ford Foundation, Norwegian Church Aid, Bread for the World), Brazilian companies (Petrobras, Eletrobras Furnas) and individual donors (Friends of Ibase).
