Development

On May 4, 2021, it was rumored that a short series produced by Blue Sky Studios known as Scrat Tails would be coming to Disney+. The series would follow the titular Scrat, who discovers that he has a son. Throughout mid-to-late 2021, footage of the series was later leaked onto YouTube, with former Blue Sky animators revealing that the series would be coming to Disney+ in 2022 after The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild.[3]

On February 22, 2022 (Blue Sky Studios’ 35th anniversary), Disney officially announced the series, and revealed the shows’ teaser poster, release date, cast and crew while also providing some promotional stills in press reports.[4][5][6][7][8]

Release

The series is scheduled to be released as a Disney+ original series on April 13, 2022.[9]

Pre-release controversy

Ivy Supersonic, a fashion and character designer from New York City, claims to have came up with the idea for the character of Scrat in 1999, which went by the name of Sqrat. The character is made up of a cross between a squirrel and a rat. She then went on to claim that she pitched her character to 20th Century Fox executives shortly afterwards, who passed on her pitch. Since the original release of Ice Age in 2002, she has accused Fox of stealing her idea. This has resulted in various protests and lawsuits conducted against Fox and Blue Sky, and in 2011, she scored a partial-victory when a judge halted Fox from preventing her from having her character's name, Sqrat, be trademarked.[10]

In early 2022, rumors started to circulate online that Disney reached out to Ivy to settle the issue, and as a result, Disney lost several trademarks to their character Scrat. Rumors continued to surge after the character was noticeably missing from The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild. DiscussingFilm, a fan-site covering news related to movies, sent a tweet on Twitter regarding the situation.[11] This tweet would later be deleted. A few days later, Richard A. Fournier, a former Blue Sky animator, after noticing the buzz that the tweet had received, went on to clarify that the rumor was untrue.[12][13]

Marketing

An Amazon-exclusive plush of Baby Scrat created by Just Play Products is expected to release on April 1, 2022. It will be made available for purchase online on the Disney shop.[14][15]
