Ishwar Kanwar Puri is an Indian-American and Canadian scientist, engineer, and academic.
Education
Puri studied at St. Xavier’s School, Delhi from 1964 to 1976. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Delhi College of Engineering of Delhi University, Delhi in 1982. He earned M.S. (1984) and Ph.D. (1987) degrees in engineering science (applied mechanics) from the University of California, San Diego.[1]
Career in engineering science
A Licensed Professional Engineer, Puri serves as Dean of Engineering and Professor at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.[2][3] He has promoted experiential learning,[4][5][6] and project-based learning and challenge-based learning .[7]
Prior to McMaster, Puri was N. Waldo Harrison Professor and Department Head at Virginia Tech,[8] when the undergraduate engineering science program was ranked fifth by U.S. News & World Report. [9] He played a role in bringing normalcy in the aftermath of the Virginia Tech shootings.[10][11][12][13]
Accomplishments
Puri is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering,[14][15] American Society of Mechanical Engineers[16], and American Association for the Advancement of Science.[17]
He received the 2021 Engineering Excellence Award from Professional Engineers Ontario and Ontario Society of Professional Engineers.[18] He was appointed as a member of the Council of Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council in 2019 for a three-year term.[19] [20] He served as chair of Engineering Deans Canada (formerly National Council of Deans of Engineering and Applied Science).[21]
Puri is the author of several books[22][23][24][25] and papers[26][27] in combustion,[28][29] magnetic fluids,[30][31][32] mathematical biology,[33][34] and nanomaterials.[35][36][37] He is listed among the top two percent of scientists in the Updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators.[38][39][40] He is also a startup founder.[41]
Topical and literary contributions
Puri writes on issues at the intersection of science, technology, education and society.[42][43][44][45][46][47] His first publication was a book of poetry, Narcissus Wept.[48][49]
