Ahmadli Jamil Teymur oglu (Azerbaijani: Cəmil Mirzə Teymur oğlu Əhmədli; 27 October 1931, Soyudlu, Gadabay District, Azerbaijan SSR, USSR — 9 February 9, 2010, Baku, Azerbaija)— Doctor of Philosophy, Professor, Honored Scientist of Azerbaijan. He was elected an academician of the Russian Peter Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1997. He was a professor at the Department of Philosophy in Humanities at Baku State University

Life[edit]

Jamil Ahmadli was born on October 27, 1931, in Soyudlu village of Gadabay District in the family of a teacher, Mirza Teymur Ahmadli. J. Ahmadli, who went to the first grade in 1938, studied with his father during the war, when schools were difficult to functionate. While studying in the 10th grade, in 1948, he won the Mathematical Olympiad held in the republic. In the same year, a representative of the newly established Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, J.Ahmadli, took part in the final exams of his school and stated that he had been admitted to that institute. However, due to financial difficulties, Jamil Ahmadli could not go to Moscow, he was admitted to the Department of Philosophy of the Azerbaijan State University (currently Baku State University) and graduated with honors.[1]

Jamil Ahmadli was admitted to the graduate school of the Institute of Philosophy of the USSR Academy of Sciences in the summer of 1953 by passing a competitive examination. He defended his dissertation on "Freedom and Necessity" under the guidance of Academician Teodor Oizerman and received the degree of Candidate of Philosophical Sciences in 1956. The book "Freedom and Necessity" (in Russian), published in Baku in 1960, was the first monograph on the subject in the former USSR.[2] In 1954-1956 he taught philosophy at Moscow State University, in 1958–1962 at the Azerbaijan Industrial Institute, in 1963–1972 at the Baku Higher Party School, in 1959–1974 at the Postgraduate School of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR.

Also, he worked as a scientific secretary at the Institute of Philosophy and Law of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences in 1957, and worked as a senior researcher, head of department.[3] He worked on the "Legal Category of Materialist Dialectics" from1958, and in 1963 published two large monographs consisting in 20 pages. These works formed the basis of the philosopher's doctoral dissertation in 1964. Ahmadli, who was the head of the Philosophy Department of the Azerbaijan Institute of National Economy, which was restored in 1966, worked there until 1990. From 1990 to 2000, he was the head of the Department of Philosophy and Sociology at Baku State University.[4]

Jamil Ahmadli was a professor at the Department of Philosophy in Humanities at Baku State University.

Jamil Ahmadli died suddenly on the night of February 9–10, 2010. He was buried in Khirdalan cemetery.

Scientific activity[edit]

The first sociological laboratory was established in Azerbaijan in 1969 on the initiative and under the leadership of Jamil Ahmadli. During the 15 years of its existence, the staff of the laboratory has conducted research on about 10 topical issues, published more than 100 books and scientific articles, organized and participated in more than 10 international conferences. 6 laboratory workers under the leadership of Jamil Ahmadli defended their dissertations and 3 of them defended their doctoral dissertations.

Ahmadli is the author of 16 monographs and more than 400 articles. He has 12 doctors and about 100 candidates. He worked on the problems of the theory of cognition, the problem of philosophical categories and principles, the philosophical problems of modern natural science, the essence and social consequences of the Scientific and Technical Revolution. The scientist is the author of 54 articles in the "Azerbaijani Soviet Encyclopedia".

Jamil Ahmadli was awarded the honorary title of Honored Scientist in 1990, a corresponding member of the Russian Peter Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1997, and an academician in 2000. The researcher was awarded the Order of Glory on October 30, 2009, for his services to the development of education and science in Azerbaijan.[5]

In 2001, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the birth of Jamil Ahmadli, the anniversary of the scientist was held at the Higher Diplomacy College (now Baku Eurasian University). On this occasion, a book entitled "Jamil Ahmadli's greatness" (Baku, "Diplomat" publishing house, 2001) dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the prominent Azerbaijani philosopher Jamil Ahmadli was published at the same university. The book contains articles about the scientist's personality, life, scientific activity, friends, colleagues, students, and those who know him in general.

The book "Bibliographic index", which contains information about the main dates of Jamil Ahmadli's life and activity, the list of his works, was published in 2001.

An evening dedicated to the memory of Jamil Ahmadli was held on February 10, 2011, at the Institute of Philosophy and Law of ANAS.
