Jang Gyu-ri (Korean: 장규리, born December 27, 1997),[1] known mononymously as Gyuri (Korean: 규리), is a South Korean singer, dancer and actress signed under Pledis Entertainment.[2] She is well known for finishing in ninth place in the South Korean reality survival show Idol School in 2017 and becoming a member of South Korean girl group Fromis 9.
Early life[edit]
Gyuri was born in Seoul, South Korea on December 27, 1997 as the youngest child of her family, with an older brother.[1] She studied abroad in Richmond, Virginia for exactly a year.
Career[edit]
2017: Idol School[edit]
She was revealed to be a contestant on the 2017 girl group survival show Idol School.[3] In the finale, her final ranking was ninth place, thus making her a member of Fromis 9.[4]
2018: Debut with Fromis 9, Produce 48[edit]
Fromis 9 officially debuted with their mini album To. Heart on January 24, 2018.[5]
Before the release of the group's sophomore EP, To. Day, Gyuri did not participate in the album's recording and promotions after she was announced to be participating in Produce 48.[6][7][8]
She was unfortunately eliminated on episode 11 of the competition, arriving in 25th place, and did not debut as a member of Iz*One. She then returned to her activities with Fromis 9 and later fully rejoined the group following the release of their single album From.9.[9][10]
2019-present: Acting debut, solo activities, departure from Fromis 9[edit]
Gyuri made her acting debut with the TvN D web drama Dating Class on May 10, 2019.[11]
On December 10, 2021, Pledis Entertainment released a statement annonucing that she would be taking a break from all activities due to muscle pain and dizziness.[12]
On April 21, 2022, it was confirmed that Gyuri was cast in SBS' upcoming drama about cheerleading, which is set to premiere during the second half of the year.[13]
On July 28, 2022, Pledis Entertainment announced that Gyuri would be leaving the group on July 31. In their press release, Pledis stated that when Fromis 9's management were transferred to the company in 2021, every other member signed a completely new contract with the company. However, Gyuri chose to transfer her original contract from CJ ENM's Off The Record that would last only one year.[14]
