Javier Sánchez-Cañizares (Córdoba, 1970) is a Spanish physicist and theologian. He currently runs the Science, Reason and Faith Group (CRYF)[1] of the University of Navarra and has been awarded in 2018 with an Expanded Reason Award in the research category. [2]

Biography[edit]

Born in Córdoba, Spain (1970), he studied at the School of the Marist Brothers in that city. During the period 1988-1999, he completed the first cycle of Physics at the University of Seville and then moved to Madrid to obtain his degree in Theoretical Physics and his PhD at the School of Sciences of the Autonomous University of Madrid, with a thesis entitled “Self-consistent description of transport in quasi-one-dimensional superconducting wires” [3] under the supervision of Prof. Fernando Sols.

In 2001, he went to Rome for a Bachelor’s and PhD in Theology at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross. His thesis belongs in the field of Fundamental Theology and deals with the revelation of God in creation within the patristic quotations of the Areopagus sermon. It was supervised the physicist and theologian prof. Giuseppe Tanzella-Nitti.[4]

After being ordained a priest in 2005 by bishop Javier Echevarría he moved to Pamplona, where he has being teaching at the University of Navarra until the present date. He initially belonged in the Department of Moral and Spiritual Theology and later in the Ecclesiastical School of Philosophy. Since 2016 he is Associate Professor of Science, Reason and Faith and head of the CRYF. He is also a researcher of the Mind-Brain Group of the Institute for Culture and Society[5] and, as of 2020, accredited tenured professorship by the Spanish National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA).

Research[edit]

Prof. Sánchez Cañizares’ research contains three distinct parts over more than twenty-five years. A first stage, in the period 1994-2001, is devoted to Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics, particularly to studying transport in mesoscopic superconducting systems. Such line of research introduces numerical calculations of transport magnitudes while also considering variations in the order parameter of superconductors due to electric current. The calculations involve methods of self-consistently solving equations that are applied to structures with normal elements and quasi-one-dimensional superconductors, with and without disorder. The highlight of this line of research has been the application of self-consistent calculations to a three-dimensional superconducting wire; thus including the Meissner effect.

The second stage covers the period 2001-2012. It is characterized by research in the field of Fundamental Theology, mainly in natural revelation, and in Moral Theology, according to the method of filial Christology. He was a member of the international group of theologians Hypsosis[6] for several of those years, collaborating in the systematic study of a filially based moral theology with different papers, chapters of books and the publication of two monographs.[7]

The third stage begins in 2012 and continues until today. Prof Sánchez-Cañizares sets out to study different aspects of the relationships between science and religion as a member of the CRYF group, founded by late prof. Mariano Artigas. His most relevant contributions belong in the fields of Philosophical Cosmology and Philosophy of Physics. He also conducts research in the field of physics and Philosophy of Mind through collaboration with the Mind-Brain Group. Recently, he has published an interdisciplinary book in collaboration with a biologist and a philosopher,[8] as well as his awarded book “Universo singular.”[9] A complete list of his publications can be found on his personal webpage.[10]

Projects[edit]

Currently, he is the leader of the project “Science and Religion in Spanish Schools”,[11] funded during the period 2018-2021 by the John Templeton Foundation, and member of the scientific council of the international interdisciplinary journal “Scientia et Fides.”[12] He is also creator of the Spanish blog “Física y Filosofía,”[13] member of the Society of Catholic Scientists,[14] where he lectured at the 2018 conference,[15] and fellow of the International Society for Science and Religion.[16]

In the fields of Philosophy of Physics and Philosophy of Mind, his research focuses on the Interpretations of Quantum Mechanics and their application to the development of a freshly minted philosophy of nature, within the overall framework of Process and Neo-Aristotelian philosophies. A more specific line is the study of the emergence of complex dynamic systems and optimization processes that ask for a deeper philosophical understanding of natural processes, particularly the emergence of higher human faculties.

Awards and distinctions[edit]

On May 24, 2018, he received one of the two Expanded Reason Awards in the research category for his work: “Universo singular. Apuntes desde la física para una filosofía de la naturaleza.” The award ceremony took place at the Casina Pio IV in Vatican City, home to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences.

On December 21, 2019, prof. Sánchez-Cañizares was distinguished with the gold badge of the Alumni Association of the Marist Brother School in Córdoba (Spain).[17]
