Jaydip Ray is the first High Sheriff for South Yorkshire from the Asian community.[1] He is also a Deputy Lieutenant for the South Yorkshire Lieutenancy, representing the Lord Lieutenant in the county.[2][3] Ray is a British consultant Ear, Nose and Throat surgeon. He is a Professor of Otology Neurotology at the University of Sheffield[4] and Professor of ENT at Sheffield Hallam University.[5]
Early Life, Education and Training[edit]
Ray was born in India, where he completed his medical degree before moving to the UK to begin his junior doctor training at St Thomas' Hospital, London. Ray pursued research in implantable hearing solutions at Cambridge, funded by the Cambridge Hearing Foundation. He completed his higher surgical training at University Hospitals Birmingham, followed by advanced fellowships at University of Sydney, Australia and Stanford University, USA.
Career and Achievements[edit]
Ray joined Sheffield Teaching Hospitals in 2006 as a consultant ENT surgeon, and has since become Professor of Otology and Neurotology with achievements including the creation of new services for auditory implants,[6][7] laryngeal dystonia,[8] wearable sensor-based balance and falls monitoring,[9] virtual reality balance rehabilitation,[10][11][12] Ray's research interests include hearing loss,[13] balance rehabilitation and tinnitus therapy.[14]
Ray is a founding member of the ENT UK Foundation which supports trainee-led research in ENT working in partnership with the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and the National Academic Collaborative for Equity and Inclusivity in Surgery (ACEIS) UK.[15][16][17] He is a founding member of the Global Healthy Hearing Ears Initiative.[18] He was part of the ENT UK COVID-19 Guidance Committee, Cochrane Rapid Evidence Synthesis portal and NIHR’s AGP Task and Finish Group.[19][20]

Jaydip Ray is married to Dr. Karabi Ray and has two grown-up daughters, Meghna and Neha.[citation needed]
