Jean Gunnhildr (/ˈdʒiːnˈɡʊn.hɪldər/, Chinese: 琴·古恩希尔德; pinyin: Qín Gǔ'ēnxī'ěrdé) is a playable character in the video game Genshin Impact, developed by miHoYo. She was one of the first playable characters to be released in the game. She is the acting leader of the Knights of Favonius, the ruling faction in the fictional country of Mondstadt. Jean received generally positive reviews from players, who praised her support and healing capabilities in combat, but censorship of her outfit in China drew dissatisfaction from both critics and players.

Jean is voiced in Chinese by Lin Su, in Japanese by Chiwa Saitō, in Korean by Ahn Young-mi, and in English by Stephanie Southerland.

Creation and design

Jean first appeared in the prologue PV of Genshin Impact, "The Outlander Who Caught the Wind", and later became a playable character in version 1.0 of the game.[5] Jean made her first ingame appearance in the Mondstadt chapter of the main storyline. Within the game, Jean is the Acting Grand Master of the Knights of Favonius, the group responsible for protecting Mondstadt. With her strong sense of responsibility, she handles the Knights' affairs conscientiously. In her story quest, it is revealed that she also has a workaholic tendency due to her dedication to her job.[6] In Jean's character profile, it is also mentioned that she is willing to sacrifice sleep to continue working.[7]

Jean is also one of the first characters in the game to have a new skin, which was released in version 1.6 of the game around June 2021.[8][9] Players could get Jean's summer skin by completing in-game activities.[10] Jean is voiced in Chinese by Lin Su,[1] in Japanese by Chiwa Saitō,[2] in Korean by Ahn Young-mi,[3] and in English by Stephanie Southerland.[2]

Characterization

As the acting leader of the Knights of Favonius, Jean is effectively the nation's highest authority (with the exception of the Grand Master, Varka, who is away in Nod-Krai on an expedition). She is also the elder sister of Barbara, a deaconess at Mondstadt's church. From a young age, Jean was raised by her parents to become a leader for the Knights.[7] In Genshin Impact's lore, the Gunnhildr family is one of Mondstadt's oldest, and one of the few noble families that maintained their integrity when the city was ruled by corrupt oligarchs. Though Jean commands the Knights of Favonius and has capable subordinates, she herself is not particularly skilled at delegating work. Her story quest highlights her hands-on nature: handling paperwork, defending the city from threats, and even helping random citizens with everyday tasks such as rescuing a cat stuck in a tree. The people of Mondstadt are grateful for everything she does.[7]

Jean deeply admires Vennessa, the legendary heroine who freed Mondstadt from tyranny. She inherited Vennessa's titles: "Dandelion Knight", "Grand Master of the Knights of Favonius", and "Lionfang Knight of the West Wind". These honors place a heavy burden of responsibility upon Jean's shoulders, but Jean remains steadfast in carrying them and protecting Mondstadt with persistence and devotion.[7]

In the prologue to the game's main storyline, Jean invites the Traveler (the protagonist) to the Knight's headquarters after they defeat the dragon Stormterror to discuss said dragon's attacks. After the Traveler purifies the Temples of the Four Winds,[lower-alpha 1] she formally invites them to join the Knights of Favonius and bestows upon them the title of "Honorary Knight". Later, she accepts a private invitation from Diluc and joins the Traveler and Venti in their mission to save Stormterror from corruption by the Abyss.

Gameplay

Jean was released as a playable character in version 1.0 of the game, obtainable via the game's wish system.[11] She is a five-star Anemo character who uses a sword in combat. Jean's normal attack has a total of five combos, and her attack speed is relatively fast. Jean's charged attack has two stages when it is pressed and held. The first is a normal attack with lower damage, and the second is a powerful upward strike that launches enemies into the air, causing them to slowly fall to the ground.

Her Elemental Skill, "Gale Blade", summons a gust of wind to launch enemies forward, dealing Anemo damage. If the skill is held, Jean can draw in surrounding enemies toward her, control the direction of their knockback, and then send them flying. While holding the skill, Jean cannot move and continuously consumes stamina. Her Elemental Burst, "Dandelion Breeze", creates a field of soothing winds centered on Jean, dealing damage to nearby enemies. It also restores health to allies in proportion to Jean's maximum health, healing both Jean and the other members of the party over time as well as dealing damage to enemies entering or exiting the field.[12]

In terms of character design, miHoYo has released several outfits for Jean. In version 1.6, Jean and her sister Barbara received summer-themed outfits: Jean's was a blue, casual summer dress paired with matching sandals. Later, following content censorship regulations set by the Chinese Communist Party, miHoYo designed new alternative costumes for Jean and three other characters that were more conservative than the other outfits.[13](pp260–261) These new skins sparked debate and concern among players. Jean's alternate outfit makes subtle changes from her original one: her cape and shoulder cloth are changed from a navy blue to a darker shade, her vest colors change from black and red to dark green, and her top was redesigned with black buckles and a white collar instead of a corset-style cut. Her gloves changed from dark blue to black with added white wristbands, and the inside of her jacket now features golden accents with teal details that match the color of her Vision. Jean's new outfit has a button-up top that covers her entire chest area.[14][15]

Although many players expressed dissatisfaction with censorship itself, opinions on the redesign were divided. App Trigger critic Andrew Lin praised the alternate look, saying Jean appeared more noble and that it better fit her status as the Acting Grand Master.[16] These alternate outfits were implemented as an additional option on January 27, 2022[17] for global servers, but were mandatory in China.[13](p261) Additionally, rumors were also raised that a group of female Chinese players reported the game's "oversexualized" character designs to Chinese regulators, according to ClutchPoints.[18] In compensation for the forced changes to the character skins on the game's China server, miHoYo issued a gift of 1,200 Primogems to Chinese players.[19][14] The change was not forced for players outside of China, but the skins were made available as an option for them.[14]

Critics generally praised Jean's gameplay, deeming her a versatile character who combines support and damage. Dot Esports' David Gealogo called her a dual-purpose character who functions well as both a support character and healer, saying she was "one of the best choices" for healers.[20] Pocket Tactics' Ruby Spiers-Unwin praised her for having a unique skill set that provides damage, healing and crowd control, saying that this makes her a valuable asset to have.[21] The Nerd Stash's Giovanna De Ita emphasized Jean's strong crowd control and her Burst's AoE healing and damage, describing her as a flexible support, sub-DPS, or utility role.[22] PCGamesN's Christian Vaz said that while Jean's base attack is relatively low, her versatility as an Anemo support and healer makes up for it; even though she isn't specialized in one particular role, her melee attacks, crowd control, and healing allow her to effectively carry a party.[23]
