Jessica Ruiz is a Philadelphia-based make-up artist, notable for using her mouth to apply cosmetics. She was born with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC), a congenital birth defect affecting the joints that limits use of arms and hands.

Early life and education[edit]

Ruiz was born with anthrogryposis, which affects joints.[1] When she she was about 10 years old, she attended a school for physically and mentally disabled children. She was often bullied by her peers for being a tomboy.[2] Her aunt later taught her how to apply makeup, though she had to develop an application method without using hands or arms. Her interest in makeup continued throughout high school, where she began to apply makeup for other students. She would place eye liner and mascara between her left thumb and index finger bending her head forward to blend colors.[3] To apply blush, foundation and lipstick, she holds the makeup brush in her mouth.[4]

Her grandfather, before he died of cancer, encouraged her to pursue her dream as a cosmetologist. “He made me promise him,” she says. “He literally said to me, ‘I don’t care what your dream is, I want you to pursue it.’” [5] However, she was not accepted into any cosmetology school after graduating from Widener Memorial School in 2008, which she attributes to her disability. According to Ruiz, "One school told me I had to bring my own model because the models they had would not be comfortable with me being so close to their face."[1] She instead followed instructional videos on YouTube.

Career[edit]

Jessica founded Dreamy Eyes Artistry, an event make-up company based in Philadelphia.[2][6] It caters to high fashion, stage make-up, special occasions (such as weddings and proms) and fantasy and gore facial prosthetics and make-up. The company has hired make-up artists to assist her, and has developed cosmetics and brush line.[7] The company name is based on her initial interest in eye makeup.

In October 2015, she was hired for Philadelphia Small Business Fashion Week after contacting founder Dawane Cromwell.[8] Cromwell explained that his only hesitation was ensuring that the venue was handicapped-accessible, rather than any concerns about Jessica's disability and her method of application.[8] Jessica was the chief cosmetologist for twenty models during the event.[8] Ruiz has also been worked at events during New York Fashion Week, applying makeup in private appointments.

In February 2019 Jessica Ruiz was part of a panel the discussion at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, where she claimed that "Hollywood would rather hire non-disabled actors to play a disabled character. It gets under my skin. People with disabilities have acting talents too."

In December 2019 Jessica was featured in the Sephora advertisement titled "How Jessi Overcame Adversity to Pursue Her Dreams."[9]

Personal Life[edit]

Jessica is married to Robert Ruiz, who she met in school and is also a person living with a physical disability.[10][2]
