Julian Treasure is a British sound expert, author, speaker and former musician. He is the founder of Sound Agency, an audio branding business. Treasure Ted talk How to speak so that people want to listen is the 6th most viewed TED talk of all time.

Education, early career[edit]

Treasure grew up in London, where he attended St Paul's School, London. He has a BA (Hons) in economics at Gonville and Caius College, of The University of Cambridge.[1]

During Treasure's early career he was a drummer for the British band The Transmitters.[2] He joined the band shortly before the release of its second album, titled And We Call That Leisure Time. He played on the 1981 Missing Presumed Dead John Peel Session[3] as well as the 1981 Transmitters Peel Session.[4] He also recorded with Fish Turned Human, The Websters and Loop Guru. As part of alternative comedy band The Kondo Brothers Treasure played live to 18 million people on the final of British TV talent show New Faces. Treasure still plays live in Blues Brothers tribute band The Rawhides.

Career[edit]

After graduating in 1979 Treasure spent 10 years working in advertising and publishing, with Saatchi & Saatchi, VNU Business Publications and International Data Group.

TPD Publishing[edit]

In 1988, he founded contract (custom) magazine publishing agency TPD Publishing, which became Just Customer Communication in 2001.[5] TPD/Just's clients included Microsoft, Toyota, ITV Digital, Lexus, Orange[6] and Apple Inc..[7][8][9] The company was acquired by Interpublic in 2001, for whom Treasure worked until 2003.[10]

During this period, Treasure was also the chairman of the UK's Association of Publishing Agencies and of the UK Digital Content Forum, and a director of the Periodical Publishers Association.[11] In 2002, he received the Chairman's Award from the Periodical Publishers Association for his services to the magazine publishing industry.[12]

The Sound Agency[edit]

In 2003, Treasure founded The Sound Agency, an audio branding business that specialises in strategic consultancy and soundscape installation in commercial spaces such as shopping malls and airports.[13][14] As the agency's chairman, Treasure has worked with brands such as BP and Nokia.[15][16]

Speaking[edit]

Treasure presented his first TED talk in July 2009. In the talk, The Four Ways Sound Affects Us, he discusses the science of sound and its impact on human behaviour and health.

Two of Treasure's later TED talks elaborated on themes discussed in The Four Ways Sound Affects Us. His 2010 talk Ssh! Sound health in 8 steps and 2012 talk Why architects need to use their ears address our increasingly noisy world and its impact on our health and education.[17][18]

Treasure's two other TED talks focus on personal communication – speaking and listening. His 2011 talk 5 ways to listen better emphasises the importance of listening as a learned and conscious skill. Treasure's most viewed TED talk is 2014's How to speak so that people want to listen. It has been watched by over 20 million people on TED.com alone and is the 6th most viewed TED talk of all time (2017).[19][20]
