Early life and education[edit]
Hansotia was born to a Parsi family in Mumbai, India.
Career[edit]
He started his career in the international trade of luxury watches in Hong Kong.[2] He moved to London and then Miami. He founded Gurkha Cigars in 1989 in Goa, India by purchasing an old cigar company label for $450.[1][3] In the late 80s, he launched his first premium cigars in the US in the shape of Gurkha Cigars.[3] In 1998, He started business with the Toraño family who made cigars for Hansotia, which turned out to be an important turning point for Gurkha Cigars.[4][why?]
On June 10, 2020, the company announced that Hansotia had resigned as chairman after posts appeared on his personal Facebook account that "mocked the Black Lives Matter movement, the murder of George Floyd and other topics related to race and society."[5] Hansotia described the posts as "very insensitive and disrespectful" and said he was ashamed of his actions but claimed his account had been hacked. The company said it was "outraged and saddened" by the social media posts and that it "cannot and will not tolerate words or acts of hate, injustice or oppression". In a corporate meeting held over Zoom, replacement CEO Jim Colucci said the company was looking for someone to buyout Hansotia's 50% stake to divest him from the company and that the name "K. Hansotia" would be removed from packaging.[6]
