Kanako Date (伊達 佳内子 Kanako Date, born September 17, 1996) is a Japanese public speaker and beauty pageant titleholder who won the Miss World Japan 2018 and represented Japan at Miss World 2018.[1]. She is a direct descendant of Masamune Date (Watari Date family)[2][3].
Biography[edit]
She has been performing Shigin since her childhood. On 19 September 2005, she won the first prize at the Shigin National Championships[4]. She has continued to win multiple prizes in 2014, 2016 at the competitions as well[5][6].
She spent 14 years at Gakushūin from kindergarten to high school. After graduating from Gakushūin Girls' Senior High School, she went to Keio University, studying Political science and law[7]. During her university days, she worked as a translator of an international news program at a television station[7]. She has been swimming since childhood and was a professional swimmer of Japan Classical Swimming Arts during her university years[8]
The 21-year-old Date applied for the Japan national competition for Miss World[9]. And she topped a field of 30 finalists, selected from 7,210 applicants in Tokyo[10].
She participated in the 68th Miss World held in Hainan Island, China, and won the first prize in the Top Talent Award[11].
Career[edit]
- 2015 – She enrolled in the Department of Political science, Faculty of Law, Keio University. In the same year, she became the youngest member of the Japanese delegates at the 67th Japan America Student Conference[12].
- 2016–2017 – She served as the student chairperson for two consecutive years at Youth Forum Japan: an international student conference which was annually held at The Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan[13].
- 2018 – Intending to expand her social contribution activities, she applied for the Japan national competition for Miss World[9]. And she was selected as "Miss World Japan 2018" on August 28[10].
- 10 November–8 December 2018 – Participated in the 68th Miss World which was held in Sanya, China, winning the first prize in Top Talent Award[11]. She was also nominated for Top 32 in Top Model Award and Top 25 in the Beauty With A Purpose Award.
- 27 March 2019 – She was invited to the Melco Women's Forum, an international conference for women's empowerment in Macau. Along with Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of Macau SAR Government, Deputy Director-General of the Economic Affairs Department of Liaison Office of The Central People’s Government in The Macau SAR, Director-General of Macau Women’s General Association of Macau, and Ann Osman who Malaysia’s first female professional Mixed martial arts fighter, she participated in a Panel discussion to share her story based on the theme ‘Best I Can Be’[14].
- July 2021 – Together with Riyo Mori, the winner of "Miss Universe 2007," she founded "5 Crowns Japan," the reunion organization of voluntary titleholders of big 5 international beauty pageants which implement social contribution activities. She is the vice president of this organization[15].
- April 2022 – Enrolled in Waseda Business School[16]
