Kundrathur Kandhalheeswarar Temple is a Saivite temple in Chennai, India. It is located in the neighbourhood of Kundrathur in Kanchipuram district. The primary deity (Moolavar) is found in the form of a linga on a square peedam or platform and is known as Kandhalheeswarar. This temple was worshipped by Sekkilar, born in Kundrathur itself, who was then chief minister of King Kulothunga Chola II.[1] The donations of King Raja Raja Chola during the year 1241 CE are found in the inscriptions in this temple.
Mythology and history[edit]
Devas are suffered much by Asura Dhaaragaasuran. So, Lord Murugan killed him at the war in Tirupporur neighbourhood. After the war, Lord Murugan decided to rest for a while for peace of mind. So, He started His journey to Tiruttani. On His way, He saw a hill with pleasant surroundings. On seeing this, He stayed there. During His stay there, he installed a Shiv linga at the foot of the hill and performed pooja and prayed. The Shiv linga was named after His name 'Kandha' with Eswarar as 'Kandhazheeswarar'.
Details of temple renovations from time to time are found in epigraphic findings dating back 1241 CE during the Rajaraja Chola period.[1]
Other deities in the temple[edit]
Built in the Dravidian temple architecture, the temple is located in Kundrathur, a western neighbourhood of Chennai, at an altitude of 46 m above the mean sea level. Apart from the primary deity, the temple has shrines for Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Durga, Rishabaarudar, 63 Nayanars and the navagrahas such as Surya (Sun) and Shani (Saturn).
