Kevin Johnston also known as Kevin J. Johnston and Kevin Jackal Johnston is a Canadian YouTuber and political candidate in Mississauga known for what have been described as "inflammatory rants" made on his YouTube channel, "Freedom Report".[1] He is best known for his opposition to Islam and Muslim immigration to Canada. In March 2017, he offered a $1,000 reward for recording of Muslim students reciting prayers in public schools containing "hate speech". The Peel District School Board condemned Johnston's video in which he made the offer and issued a memo reiterating its policy that personal recording devices can only be used in schools for educational purposes, as directed by staff and that "this invasion of privacy" proposed by Johnston was inappropriate.[2]

Earlier that month, several candidates for the leadership of the Conservative Party were criticized for granting interviews to Johnston "Freedom Report" videos.[1]

In July 2017, a claim by Johnston that two individuals arrested on April 26, 2017 following a car crash were Muslim extremists on their way to carry out a terrorist attack against St. Clair College in Windsor, Ontario was refuted by the Windsor Star which reported college officials saying “the event back in April was fully investigated by all levels of law enforcement and there was never a threat to St. Clair College staff or students.” The Ontario Provincial Police told the Star that Johnston’s claims were “unsubstantiated and it’s not true.”[3]

Johnston also owns the online newspaper, the Mississauga Gazette which carries much of his material.[1]

Johnston ran for Mayor of Mississauga in the 2014 municipal elections finishing 11th out of 15 contenders, with 741 votes (0.46%).

On July 14, 2017, YouTube terminated Johnston's account for multiple terms of service violations.[4]

On July 24, 2017, Johnston was arrested and police charged him with one count of wilful promotion of hatred as per the Criminal Code of Canada after receiving consent from the Ontario attorney general's office. [5] Johnston was released on bail after a brief appearance in court on the 24th of July. The conditions of his release included an order not to have any contact with three people. He was also ordered to stay 100 meters away from any mosque or Muslim community centre in Ontario, except for when traveling on the road.[6]
