Markquez Lao Santiago (born April 11, 1988), better known as Kid Buu, is a Canadian rapper, singer, songwriter and Instagram star based in Toronto, Ontario. He is best known for his song "Death 2 Soundcloud", which has received over 10 million views on YouTube, as well as his songs "Dead Roses (Never Wanted You)" and "Double Up (Run It Up)" with Ski Mask the Slump God. He is also known for claiming to be a second generation clone that was created by the Bahamian company Cloneaid.[1][2][3][4]

Early life[edit]

Santiago was born on April 11, 1988 at St. Elizabeth Child Care Center in Jersey City, New Jersey. He later moved with his fraternal twin brother, Jason, and his mother to South Florida, specifically the Hialeah and Opa-locka areas, in search of a better life. As a child, Santiago took martial arts classes. He attended public school before being homeschooled. He recalls the death of friends in harsh neighborhoods as well as having little food as motivators for a better life. He is of Sicilian and Puerto Rican descent.[5]

Before rapping, Santiago sold toys and other trinkets online to get by.[6]

Career[edit]

In 2011, Santiago started rapping under the moniker "Humongous The God" (shortened to "HXTXG"). In an interview with Curated Flame, he stated that the name was an amalgamation of "huge" and "monstrous" which he used to describe his personality.[7] For the next few years, he would release music on the hip-hop distribution platform Datpiff. This included his "Man Vs God" series of mixtapes. [8]

On March 8, 2012, YouTube user Mrsouthernmajesty uploaded a video of Santiago remixing Kanye West and Jay-Z's track Gotta Have It. [9]

On October 12, 2016, he released the music video for his single "Eastside" with DJ Khaled. [10] On October 23, 2016, he released the music video for his single "White Vans" with rap trio Migos. [11] Both tracks appeared on his fifth mixtape, "In Gwalla We Trust". [12]

On February 13, 2018, under the name "Kid Buu", he released his debut 9-track album, "Blind For Love". It featured the popular singles "Dead Roses (Never Wanted You)" and "Double Up (Run It Up)" with Ski Mask the Slump God. The album also features production from Ronny J. [13]

On July 28, 2018, he released the single "death 2 soundcloud". [14] The track follows the narrative of Kid Buu being the last bat (rapper) that that flies through the portal to Hell, (SoundCloud), and closes it off. [15] The music video for the track was released on the same day and currently sits at over 10 million views on YouTube. It is his most successful track. [16]

On February 14, 2019, he released his second album, "Blind For Love2". The shorter release featured the single "Misery Needs Company". [17] The accompanying music video for the track was released on April 1, 2019. [18]

On August 23, 2019, he released the single "Sauce" with Lil Keed. [19] The music video for the track was released on October 6, 2019. [20] The track is the lead single off his third studio album, Revenge of the Clones, which was later released on November 8, 2019.[21][22]

Personal Life[edit]

In late 2017, Santiago changed his stage name to "Kid Buu", in reference to his favorite Dragon Ball Z character,[23] and for his love of anime. The "Majin" tattoo between his eyes, his fangs and his pink hair further promote this persona. [24]
