"Kimmy Goes on a Date!" is the third episode of the first season of the American streaming television sitcom Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. The episode premiered in the United States on Netflix on March 6, 2015. The show's teleplay was written by Jack Burditt and Robert Carlock, the latter being one of the show's creators. "Kimmy Goes on a Date!" was directed by Beth McCarthy-Miller.

In this episode, Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper) is set up on a date with an elderly man, Grant Beldin (John McMartin), by Jaqueline Voorhees (Jane Krakowski). At the same time, Jaqueline reveals that she is Lakota Sioux and her step-daughter Xanthippe (Dylan Gelula) attempts to find out Kimmy's past. At the same time, Kimmy's roommate Titus Andromedon (Titus Burgess) tries to take new headshots without his landlady Lillian Kaushtupper (Carol Kane) finding out.

Plot[edit]

In the cold open, Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper) has a dream that she returns from a date with her friend and co-worker Charles (Andy Ridings). However, in the dream, she finds herself locked in the bunker once again. She wakes up to find that she is choking her roommate Titus Andromedon (Titus Burgess). He tells Kimmy that she should get a therapist so she can work out her past. He also tells her that he plans to get new headshots that day and that he has to hide the money from Lillian Kaushtupper (Carol Kane) so she won't take it. As Titus is leaving for his photoshoot, Lillian sees him in his suit and asks where he is going. He lies and tells her that he is going to a friend's funeral and she offers to come with him. Titus and Lillian end up crashing a Korean funeral in Central Park and Titus tells her that he was asked to sing. Panicked, he sings "I'll Make Love to You" by Boyz II Men. On their way home, Titus reveals his true plan he had that day to Lillian and she tells him to use it on headshots anyways so he can get an acting job. However, the money is stolen when a thief sees Titus in his suit.

Meanwhile at Jaqueline Voorhees' (Jane Krakowski) house, her son Buckley's (Tanner Flood) tutor, Charles (Andy Ridings) is helping with a family tree project. Charles asks Jaqueline if she could tell him about her past and she gets a flashback to her childhood in Bear Creak, South Dakota. It is revealed that Jaqueline (who's actual name is Jackie Lynn) is Lakota Sioux and she died her hair blonde and got blue contact lenses to look caucasian. In the flashback, her parents Virgil (Gil Birmingham) and Fern (Sheri Foster) disapprove of her decision to move to Manhattan. Back in the present, she denies Charles' request and Kimmy arrives. Jaqueline's step-daughter, Xanthippe (Dylan Gelula), asks to hear about Kimmy's backstory, hoping to use a piece of information against her. Kimmy lies by telling them that she is from Middletown, Ohio and Xanthippe is stumped. Kimmy overhears that Jaqueline is headed to therapy and tells Jaqueline that she wants someone to talk to. Jaqueline sets her up on a date with a wealthy man named Grant Beldin (John McMartin). Kimmy arrives at a restaurant but realizes that Grant is a very elderly man with memory loss and hearing issues. She realizes that she can say anything she wants with no consequences but quickly realizes that it is not helping her. After he asks her who she is, he hears her last name "Schmidt" and suspects that she is a German spy. At another point, Grant mistakes Jaqueline for Eleanor Roosevelt and Kimmy realizes that she cannot see him anymore.

Throughout the day, Jaqueline has other flashbacks after strange occurrences such as finding a black thread among her blonde hair. When Xanthippe tries once again to reveal Kimmy's true past, Jaqueline interrupts and tells her that "Her past doesn't matter. People come to New York and start new lives and it gets complicated." Jaqueline finally grounds Xanthippe and Kimmy is asked out by Charles. In the final shot of the episode, Jaqueline pulls a sacred necklace out from her shirt and says "I love you" in Native American.
