"Kimmy Is Bad at Mathl!" is the eighth episode of the first season of the American streaming television sitcom Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. The episode premiered in the United States on Netflix on March 6, 2015. The show's teleplay was written by Meredith Scardino. "Kimmy Is Bad at Math!" was directed by Michael Engler.

In this episode, Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper) gets tutored by another student in her G.E.D. prep class, Dong Nguyen (Ki Hong Lee). Meanwhile, Jaqueline White (Jane Krakowski) gets divorced from Julian Voorhees and Kimmy's roommate Titus Andromedon (Titus Burgess) finds that wearing a werewolf costume in the streets of New York makes people nicer to him. Kimmy and Titus' landlady, Lillian Kaushtupper (Carol Kane), spends the episode worrying that her neighborhood will get gentrified.

Plot[edit]

After unsuccessfully trying to create a G.E.D. study group, Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper) returns to her apartment where she gets a phone call from her employer Jaqueline Voorhees (Jane Krakowski). Jaqueline tells Kimmy that her husband Julian is staying at a hotel and that Jaqueline plans to divorce him. Jaqueline asks if Kimmy could come with her to divorce lawyer's office and Kimmy agrees. At the lawyer Gary Dubbin's (Jason Kravits) office, he gives Jaqueline a settlement of twelve million dollars, which she calls peanuts. Sometime later, Kimmy returns to Jaqueline's house and hears that Jaqueline is not getting divorced, much to Kimmy's surprise. To show Jaqueline how good the divorce would be, Kimmy decides to call one of Jaqueline's friends who is also divorced, Mimi Kanassis (Amy Sedaris). However, Mimi reveals to Jaqueline that she only came to the mansion to seduce Julian and tells Jaqueline that she misses her rich lifestyle, furthering Jaqueline's decision to stay married. In another attempt, Kimmy takes Jaqueline to her apartment to show her that twelve million dollars is plenty to live off of. Later, Jaqueline tells Kimmy to realize that twelve million dollars is not enough but Kimmy remembers a math lesson where she learned that "Money makes money, it's just a compounding interest." Kimmy finally does a correct math equation and figures out that if Jaqueline invested some of the money, she would end up with twenty-four million dollars. Though, Jaqueline tells her that it is not actually about the money and actually that she is too scared to start over. Kimmy reveals her true identity to Jaqueline and tells her that she came from nothing. This inspires Jaqueline to get divorced Kimmy tells her that she would be Jaqueline's friend even if she wasn't an employee.

Kimmy goes to meet with a student in her G.E.D. prep class, Dong Nguyen (Ki Hong Lee), who is going by "Richard Pennsylvania" to avoid the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. She asks him if he can tutor her in math but he tells her that he has no time because of his job. She tells him that she could do some of his deliveries so that they can study together. Meanwhile, as Kimmy's roommate Titus Andromedon (Titus Burgess) is working at a themed restaurant, he discovers that citizens in New York are kinder to him as a werewolf than as a black man. On another day, Kimmy and Dong go to study at Central Park and she takes him to see the fountain from the opening sequence of F.R.I.E.N.D.S. However a police officer tells them that it is just a regular fountain. However, Dong returns to Kimmy's apartment later angry because Kimmy did not know how to make change for the orders she delivered. This led to Dong's boss docking his pay by two-hundred dollars. He quits tutoring her and rides off. He delivers Chinese food to her and she realizes that his English is improving as well as her math skills. He agrees to continue tutoring her and Titus realizes that he cannot be a werewolf for the rest of his life. Kimmy's boyfriend Logan (Adam Campbell) arrives and takes her to dinner at the restaurant featured in Ghostbusters. Dong rides by the restaurant, sees Kimmy dating another man, and falls to his knees in despair like Rick Moranis did in the film.
