"Kimmy Goes to School!" is the sixth episode of the first season of the American streaming television sitcom Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. The episode premiered in the United States on Netflix on March 6, 2015. The show's teleplay was written by Dan Rubin and Lon Zimmet. "Kimmy Goes to School!" was directed by Michael Engler.

In this episode, Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper) attends G.E.D. prep but is stuck with an uninspired teacher, Mr. Lefkovitz (Richard Kind), who just wants to do so badly that he ends up spending his time in a room where he can relax all day. Meanwhile, Kimmy's roommate Titus Andromedon (Titus Burgess) and their landlady Lillian Kaushtupper (Carol Kane) film a music video at Jaqueline Voorhees' (Jane Krakowski) mansion.

Plot[edit]

Titus Andromedon (Titus Burgess) takes his roommate Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper) to high school for G.E.D prep. She goes into class and meets Dong Nguyen (Ki Hong Lee), a Vietnamese immigrant, and her teacher Mr. Lefkovitz (Richard Kind), who could care less about the class. Instead of teaching, he just plays the film Major League for the whole period while he sleeps. After class, Kimmy confronts her teacher asking to actually learn in class but he leaves without offering any help. Kimmy goes to the front desk to report Mr. Lefkovitz but the receptionist Deborah (Tamara Della Anderson) tells her that he is on thin ice with the school board and that one more report could get him fired. Kimmy, not wanting to hurt him, decides to stay quiet about the incident. Kimmy has an epiphany and decides to try to re-inspire Mr. Lefkovitz's spark for teaching. She brings one of his former students, Mike Stampone (Dean Neistat), to the high school to inspire him. However, it turns out that Mike hates Mr. Lefkovitz. He explains that he decided not to send Bronx Science, the school Mike was accepted into, a form documenting that Mike could attend. Kimmy realizes that Mr. Lefkovitz has always been a selfish and uninspired person. She tells him what Deborah said and he excitedly tells her that he has been trying to get fired from teaching for years. However, because he has tenure, instead of getting fired, he would get sent to a lounge where he would relax all day. As the class is watching Major League again one day, Kimmy convinces the class to study hard so they can ace the G.E.D. test and force Mr. Lefkovitz to keep teaching.

When Titus returns home, he calls his landlady Lillian Kaushtupper (Carol Kane) in to help him film a music video. He tells her that he will write a song titled "Pinot Noir." They try to film at a strip club and an abandoned chandelier store but are kicked out of both locations. Later, Kimmy asks if Titus can go to Jaqueline Voorhees' (Jane Krakowski) mansion to check on the flowers and he realizes that he and Lillian could finish their music video there. As they are filming the last clip they need, Titus accidentally breaks a curtain rod and Lillian flees the house. Jaqueline's step-daughter Xanthippe (Dylan Gelula) arrives home to clean up the mess from a party she threw the previous night. When she arrives, Titus pretends to be a handyman fixing the curtain rod and she makes him help clean. Back at her apartment, Lillian sees a pug with a bandana eating pizza, thinks of Titus, and decides to go back to the Voorhees' residence to help him finish the music video. Realizing that the sun is almost down, Titus decides to sneakily finish the music video. Xanthippe sees him and Lillian and decide to call her father, Julian, to get Kimmy fired. Titus threatens Xanthippe with revealing the fact that she trashed Julian's mansion and she agrees to not say anything. As they are cleaning up Julian's study, they realize that an ancient relative's pipe is missing and they go to find it. Xanthippe finds the pipe with a group of friends including Simone (Katherine Reis). Titus pretends to be an Italian handyman to scare them and he successfully retrieves the pipe. He and Lillian also tell Xanthippe that she should find new friends.

In the end of the episode, Titus' music video plays interspersed with scenes of Kimmy studying and Xanthippe doubting her friendship with Simone.

Production[edit]

"Kimmy Goes to School!" was written by Dan Rubin and Lon Zimmet. It was directed by Michael Engler. Rubin would return to write several episodes in the other three seasons but this was Zimmet's only episode.

Titus Burgess, who was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, submitted "Kimmy Goes to School!" for consideration.
