"Kimmy Goes to Court!" is the twelfth episode of the first season of the American streaming television sitcom Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. The episode premiered in the United States on Netflix on March 6, 2015. The show's teleplay was written by Jack Burditt and Emily Altman. "Kimmy Goes to Court!" was directed by Ken Whittingham.

In this episode, the trial of Reverend Wayne Gary Wayne (Jon Hamm), the man who kidnapped Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper) and three other women, continues. The Reverend messes with Kimmy's head which gives her the idea to go back to the bunker where she was kidnapped with the other three women. Meanwhile, Kimmy's roommate Titus Andromedon (Titus Burgess) decides to be interviewed by different reporters so Kimmy doesn't "have to," though he secretly just wants the attention.

Plot[edit]

After the events of the previous episode where Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper) and her roommate Titus Andromedon (Titus Burgess) decided to come testify against Reverend Wayne Gary Wayne (Jon Hamm) in Durnsville, Indiana, they arrive and meet up with Kimmy's friend and fellow victim Cyndee Pokorny (Sara Chase). Cyndee thanks Kimmy for coming and invites her to be maid of honor at Cyndee's wedding. Kimmy happily accepts and they are taken to the courthouse by Kimmy's step-father and former police offer Randy (Tim Blake Nelson). When they get there, Kimmy is crowded with reporters and quickly becomes overwhelmed. Titus at first tries to keep the reporters away but then decides that he will be interviewed instead of Kimmy for her sake, but also so that he can get national attention. When they get inside the main room, Kimmy meets the dim-witted prosecutors Marcia Clark (Tina Fey) and Chris Darden (Jerry Minor) and the third day of questioning begins. During Kimmy's questioning session, Reverend Wayne asks Kimmy why she was so hesitant to come back to Durnsville and she tells the jury that bad things happened to her there. The Reverend once again switches around her words to make it sound like she hates the town of Durnsville. The jury is once again in the Reverend's favor and the court takes a recess.

Meanwhile, outside the courtroom, Titus is loving all the attention. He is visited by Walter Bankston (Mike Britt) who had a viral video once. He warns Titus that there is a darker side to fame than people think but Titus ignores him. The court reconvenes and the Reverend asks Kimmy why she didn't just leave if she hated the bunker. She replies with the fact that he would not let her and he invites everyone in the court room to a flashback in the bunker. During the flashback, Kimmy argues with the Reverend that she believes the outside world still exists. He makes Kimmy a deal that if Cyndee is thrown outside and survives, he would let the other three go. This messes with Kimmy's head and she decides to keep her mouth quiet about it. Back in the present, Cyndee realizes that they could have gotten out of the bunker seven years earlier than they did and leaves the courtroom. After the third day of questioning is over, Cyndee angrily tells Kimmy that she isn't maid of honor anymore and leaves the courthouse.

Kimmy goes back to her hotel room where she realizes that Titus had not actually watched the trial and instead tried to achieve fame. Titus inspires Kimmy to try one more idea and she goes to Cyndee's bachelorette party where Gretchen Chalker (Lauren Adams) and Donna Maria Nuñez (Sol Miranda), the other two mole women, also are. Kimmy tells them that they need to go to the bunker again to get evidence against the Reverend themselves. Cyndee reluctantly agrees and Randy stands guard as they all go down to the bunker. Once they arrive, Kimmy lies to Gretchen by telling her that her, Cyndee, and Donna Maria are going to the pantry. However, Kimmy actually takes them to the Reverend's private room to see if they can find any evidence. They go into the room and the lights suddenly turn on. They realize that the crank he made them turn all day was actually the power source for his room. They begin to look around and Kimmy finds a safe behind curtains. Kimmy opens the safe using the code 666 for June 6, 2006, the date they were kidnapped. It opens, and they gasp at what they see, though it is unknown to the viewer.

During this time, Randy has seen a cat run by, recognized it as the mayor's pet, and left the four women in the bunker. What he does not notice is that the top is closing very slowly due to the wind. Meanwhile, as Titus is preparing for an interview on national television, he accidentally sings an embarrassing song as he is live. Just before the credits, a remix of the song is shown playing on YouTube.

Production[edit]

"Kimmy Goes to Court!" was written by Jack Burditt and Emily Altman. It was directed by Ken Whittingham. While Burditt had written for the show before, this was Altman's first time working on an episode. However, they both would go on to write several other episodes. It was also Whittingham's first time directing, though he would return for two other episodes.

Tina Fey, who was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series, submitted "Kimmy Goes to Court!" for consideration.
