"Kimmy Has a Birthday!" is the ninth episode of the first season of the American streaming television sitcom Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. The episode premiered in the United States on Netflix on March 6, 2015. The show's teleplay was written by Jack Burditt. "Kimmy Has a Birthday!" was directed by Todd Holland.

In this episode, Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper) throws a party for her thirtieth birthday. However, the party is ruined because of her roommate Titus Andromedon's (Titus Burgess) drama with a co-worker and the unexpected arrival of her stepfather Randy (Tim Blake Nelson) and stepsister Kymmi (Kiernan Shipka).

Plot[edit]

On Kimmy Schmidt's (Ellie Kemper) thirtieth birthday, she asks her roommate Titus Andromedon (Titus Burgess) what he got her as a present. He tells her that adults don't usually receive gifts on their birthdays but she assumes that he is joking. He then lies and tells her that he is writing her a song as a gift. When they get back to their home, they find Kimmy's stepfather, Randy (Tim Blake Nelson), and stepsister, Kymmi (Kiernan Shipka), waiting. Through a flashback, it is learned that Randy married Kimmy's mother after he became the lead detective on Kimmy's case, though he was not the one to find her. Kimmy tells them that she wants them to leave and he agrees but he gives her a birthday present first. Kimmy tells Titus that she wants the party to be a fresh start for her life. When they arrive, she finds a present from her boyfriend Logan Beekman (Adam Campbell) who tells her over the phone that he will get her thirty gifts that day. At Titus' job, he tries to write Kimmy a song but is distracted by an attractive man wearing a mask over his face. Titus invites the masked man to Kimmy's party, though she is upset by this. She also tells Titus that she is upset because Logan has not arrived to help her set up for the party.

Unlike Logan, Kimmy's friend Dong Nguyen (Ki Hong Lee) arrives early for the party with a bike he built as a gift. With help from Kimmy's landlady Lillian Kaushtupper (Carol Kane), he hides the bike in Kimmy's kitchen. As the party starts, Kimmy goes into her room and opens her present from Randy, a locket. When she goes back to the main room, she is shocked to see that Randy and Kymmi have returned. When Logan arrives to Kimmy's party with ice as she requested, he finds that Dong has also gotten a block of ice off from the street. Kimmy also mistakes Dong's present as one of the thirty that Logan got her. Kimmy's anger only rises when Kymmi takes her locket. Kymmi explains that her whole life has been sheltered because of what happened to Kimmy and that the locket was originally Kymmi's. She also tells Kimmy that she has always wanted to go to an Olive Garden and she has never been allowed to because of Randy's strict rules. Kymmi runs into Titus' room and Randy tries to get her out. Meanwhile, Titus' guest arrives wearing a motorcycle helmet. When he takes the helmet off, it is revealed that it is one of Titus' ex-boyfriends, Fabian (Jordan Keith Lowenstein).

Randy realizes that the door on Titus' door has no lock and breaks in, seeing that Kymmi has escaped out of the window. As he goes to look for her, Dong confronts Logan about claiming the bike was his present. Logan tells him that his assistant bought all of the presents and that Logan simply assumed the bike was one of them. Kimmy's anger reaches its maximum when Dong crashes his foot into her wall. She sends everyone away and Titus tells her that she pulled off a successful "adult" party. She asks to hear the song he wrote and he realizes that he could sing anything because she has not heard any new songs since 1998. He sings "Firework" by Katy Perry to her and Randy comes back to the house. It is revealed that he asked two men on Kimmy's sidewalk for help and then did heroin to prove he was not a cop. He admits to Kimmy that he failed as a father and she realizes where Kymmi is. They arrive at the three-story Olive Garden in Times Square and join Kymmi at a table. Kimmy gives her half of the locket and they tell a waitress that they will be dining family style.
