Lambert Smith Hampton (LSH) is a residential and commercial property consultancy operating in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland with 29 offices and over 1,000 staff. The firm works with investors, owners and occupiers of commercial and residential property across both the public and private sectors.
LSH has grown into one of the largest property firms[1] in the UK via strategic acquisitions and mergers. Property Week ranked the company in its Top Property Consultancies, ranking it 9th for highest revenue[1].
History[edit]
LSH was founded by Robert Herring in 1773, when on April 1, their first sale was published in the London Daily Advertiser. In 1852, they expanded to offer more services, including auctioning and surveying.
In 1980, they amalgamated with 10 regional surveying partnerships to move to have nationwide coverage, trading as Lambert Smith & Partners. In 1986, Abaco purchased Lambert Smith & Partners for £12.6m and in 1987 and the firm was amalgamated with Hamptons.[2]
Hamptons was purchased by Bristol and West Building Society in September 1990 & would go on to be purchased again inn February 1996, this time, by Cluttons LLP for £3.8million and the Hong Kong operations of the combined company were renamed Cluttons-Hamptons in April 1996[3] Lambert Smith Hampton was subsequently subject to a management buyout in early 1991 for a price tag of £5 million after being incorporated as a business in 1990.[2].
In 1995, LSH merged with Connell Wilson[4] to create one of the largest commercial property consultancies in the United Kingdom. The following year, it merged with Herring Baker Harris.
In 1999, LSH was bought by WS Atkins Group plc[5].
LSH acquired Swansea based agency Poolman Harlow in 2006[6][7] and purchased Young & Butt[8] to create new LSH offices in Southampton and Fareham. LSH completed a management buyout[9] from parent company Atkins in 2007 and began trading as a private limited company.
In November 2013, LSH was bought by Countrywide plc, the United Kingdom's largest property group.[10][11]. This reunited Lambert Smith Hampton & Hamptons for the first time in 20 years.
In 2014, LSH acquired the commercial division of BTWShiells[12][13][14] the sixth largest manager of shopping centres and retail parks across the UK and Republic of Ireland. The transaction saw BTWShiells return to the LSH fold, having been part of the business until a 2003 management buy-out.
In 2015, LSH acquired ES Group[15], and Douglas Newman Good Commercial[16].
Most recently, in 2016 LSH acquired Hodgson Elkington[17], the largest surveying practice in Lincoln and Lawrence Tattersall in Sheffield[18], a full-service practice with a particular focus on the licensed and leisure sector.
In November 2019, Countrywide announced the sale of LSH to Great Global Holdings, however this deal never materialised.[19][20]
In 2021, Connells Group purchased Countrywide therefore making LSH part of their group.[21]
