From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Lew Baldwin is an American digital artist and filmmaker. His work includes video installations, film collaborations, music, and painting. He releases music under the moniker Fantastic Place.[1]

Early life and education[edit]

Baldwin was raised in Dallas[1] and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1992.[citation needed]

Career[edit]

His work, redsmoke.com, was selected for the Whitney Biennial in 2000. In 2001, he created Milk Milk Lemonade for the first all-digital show, Bitstreams, at The Whitney Museum of American Art. The piece included a large projected text wall, which allowed the general public to post thoughts, ideas, poems, etc. in real-time using a website.[citation needed]

In 2002, he created Goodworld which stripped websites of images and text, turning them into abstract color blocks.[2] Goodworld was a reaction to the extreme commercialization of the internet at the time.[citation needed]

Baldwin created visual sequences for the 2004 film November, starring Courtney Cox and James LeGros. It is one of the first films shot on digital cameras and made in 15 days. The effects were mostly done in-camera using glass, water, and ink.  He also wrote the soundtrack for November, designed the opening title sequence, and provided additional camera work. November won the Cinematography award at the Sundance Film Festival in 2004. His 2010 short film, Abraded, was selected for the Woodstock Film Festival.[citation needed]

His artwork has been shown at the New Museum, Pasadena Armory for the Arts, Whitney Museum of American Art, The Art Association in Jackson Hole, WY, Sundance Film Festival, ID Magazine, Wallpaper, USA Today, and in numerous festivals in the US, Venezuela, Brazil, Italy and Japan.[citation needed]

Baldwin was cited in the book No Crying in Baseball, published by Hachette Books in 2023, for his experience working on the film A League of Their Own as a teenager in Chicago.[citation needed]
