List of League of Legends champions

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Seven champions all ready to meet their opponents face on.
Seven of the most popular champions playable in League of Legends commonly found in promotional material. From left to right: Cho'Gath, Ryze, Teemo, Ashe, Katarina Du Couteau, Kayle, Mordekaiser, Warwick.

The League of Legends video game features a wide cast of characters involved in the game.[1] They may either come as non-playable characters (NPCs), or as playable champions, which are a large majority of the cast. The champions reside in the fictional world of Runeterra, whose landscape and geography has been significantly altered by the excessive use of magic in past disputes and wars.

In the original lore, a group of powerful magicians known as summoners have decided to form the "League of Legends", an organization which would serve to mediate future political conflicts through sanctioned battles within the Institute of War. Although the Institute of War is primarily to keep peace between the two major city states, Demacia and Noxus, individuals who enter the League of Legends can come from a wide range of regions in Runeterra. Those that have been chosen to participate in these battles are considered champions.

Each champion possesses different strengths and skills that define their play-styles. Most champions, with the exceptions of Jayce, Elise, Lee Sin, Gnar, Rek'Sai, Quinn, Nidalee and Rengar, have four active abilities and one passive ability. While each champion's background is explored in their lore, the background of the League of Legends world is subject to change—as are the champions' interactions—as of 2014 when developers Riot expressed an interest in expanding the game's mythos.[2]

The champions from League of Legends have also appeared in other media like the games Teamfight Tactics and Legends of Runeterra.[3] A comic book series called League of Legends: Lux publishes by Marvel Comics features champions such as the titular Lux as well as Garen and other champions from the world of Demacia.[4]

League of Legends champions have also been fictional "members" three musical bands, K/DA and True Damage. Pentakill, a heavy metal band, K/DA, a K-pop girl group, and True Damage, a hip hop group.[5]

K/DA is a virtual K-pop girl group consisting of four themed versions of League of Legends characters Ahri, Akali, Evelynn and Kai'Sa. Evelynn and Kai'Sa are voiced by American singers Madison Beer and Jaira Burns respectively, while Ahri and Akali are voiced by (G)I-dle members Miyeon and Soyeon.

True Damage is a virtual hip-hop group consisting of the champions Akali, Ekko, Qiyana, and Senna.[6][7]

History[edit]

There were originally 17 champions: Alistar, Annie, Ashe, Fiddlesticks, Jax, Kayle, Master Yi, Morgana, Nunu, Ryze, Sion, Sivir, Soraka, Teemo, Tristana, Twisted Fate, and Warwick.[8][9] In July 2009 Cho'Gath and Amumu were added.[10] In October 2011, Wukong, the Monkey King, was added. Based off of the character Sun Wukong, the champion plays as a jungler.[11]

In 2012 there were five new champions released: Nasus, Janna, Gangplank, Malphite and Dr. Mundo.[12]

In November 2014, Calista, Spear of Vengeance was released. She is a marksmen from Shadow Isles.[13]

Braum, a Melee support from Frejord, was added in 2014.[14]

In 2014, Vel-Koz, a midlane AP champion was released.[15] In 2015 Tahm Kench, a support or solo later, was release.[16] During the announcement Riot also revealed the hiring of Warhammer novelist Graham McNeill as the new senior narrative writer.

In 2015 Bard was released.[17]

In April 2019, Yuumi, a support designed to help new players learn the game was added.[18] Senna was released at the end of 2019.

Senna was announced at Riot's 10 year anniversary event and released in 2019.[19] Sett was released in 2020.[20] Lilia, a jungler, was released in 2020.[21][22]

Kai'sa was released in April 2018. The character designed received some criticism for being hyper sexualized, to which Riot apologied.[23]
