Lore M. Dickey, Ph.D. (born October 13, 1961), is an early career American psychologist known for his ongoing contributions to contemporary psychology, specifically, his knowledge and dedication to positive identity development for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) and gender non-conforming people. One of his most influential works to date is co-authoring with Anneliese Singh, Ph.D. to oversee and produce the APA "Guidelines for Psychological Practice with Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming People".[1]

Early life

Lore M. Dickey was born Mary Dickey McKinney. He was born in Phoenix, Arizona to a prominent family and is the second of four children. He struggled with grief following the death of his father (September 2, 1981). Dickey struggled with depression, alcoholism, and understanding his own identity. Dickey "came out" as a lesbian in the summer of 1983, "came out" as transgender in March 1999, and began his social and medical transition on the anniversary of his father's death, on September 2, 1999. He transitioned at age 37 (female to male). Following his transition, Dr. Dickey published works such as, My New Male Privilege.[2]

What is in a name?

Mary Dickey McKinney legally changed his name to Lore M. Dickey, intentionally spelled in all lowercase letters. Dickey explains the reasons behind his non-conventional spelling lies behind the belief that "no one letter is more important than the other and when you capitalize something that means it carries more value.” Other examples and explanations of this idea can be found on e.e. cummings' page and blogs.[3]

Contributions

Dickey was still a graduate student at the time of his appointment and oversaw seven other established doctoral-level psychologists in the field of transgender mental health. The guidelines, published in 2015, "The Guidelines for Psychological Practice with Transgender and Gender Nonconforming People" [1] are a crucial contribution to the field of psychology, as they outline ethical approaches to serving transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC) clients while being culturally competent and trans-affirmative.
  • In late 2009, Dr. Dickey was among a small number of specialized counselors who, under the American Counseling Association, released their Competencies for Counseling Transgender Clients, which outlines goals and treatment approaches that have evidence/research supporting their effectiveness with the transgender population.[4]
  • Dr. Lore M. Dickey was a member of the board of the Jim Collins Foundation, which provides grants to transgender individuals to cover or assist in paying for transitional surgeries.[5]
  • Dickey is an established international expert on the issues and concerns of transgender and gender non-conforming identity, with conference presentations in Bangkok, Cape Town, South Africa, and Oslo, Norway.
