Ludwig Anders Ahgren (/ɑːɡrən/; born July 6, 1995) is an American streamer, YouTube personality, entrepreneur, actor, and Super Smash Bros. Melee Esports commentator and competitor.[1] Ahgren is best known for his live streams on Twitch, where he broadcasts video game related content as well as non-video game related content such as game shows and contests. He is also known for his work as an esports commentator at various Super Smash Bros. Melee tournaments. Since beginning streaming full-time in 2018, Ahgren has developed a cult following of loyal fans, and launched the Mogul Moves clothing brand.[2] At one point he was considered the 'fastest button-masher in the world.'[3]

Melee career and early life

Growing up in a French American bilingual household with his mother and sister in New Hampshire (his father died in Ahgren's youth), Ahgren graduated cum laude from Arizona State University with a bachelor's degree in English Literature and a bachelor's degree in Journalism And Mass Communication in 2017.[4] In college, Ahgren performed stand-up and sketch comedy for Tempe Late Night, a student ran comedy troupe.[5] Competing under the gamertag Ludwig as a Melee competitor, Ahgren has seen limited but notable success. At Smash the Record 2017, Ahgren took sets off of two of the top 104 ranked Melee players in the world at the time, Team Liquid's Chillindude[6][7] and Tempo Storm's Vro.[8][9][10] Ahgren also took a game off of the 12th ranked player in the world, Westballz,[11] at Elysium #2, later losing the set 1–2.[12] Ahgren has achieved much more success as a Melee commentator, calling matches at many Melee tournaments, including the GENESIS series,[13] and Smash Camp: End of Summer in 2019, an event were players had the option to spend the night in cabins at the venue, Friendly Pines Camp in Tuscon, Arizona.[14][15] Ahgren commentated grand finals of the event with his roommate Anthony "Slime" Bruno, where Zain "Zain" Naghami defeated Edgard "n0ne" Sheleby to win the event.[16]

In 2019, Ahgren would later have a rematch with Chillindude at Mainstage, a Melee and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate national tournament in Ontario, California, where Ahgren would lose to Chillindude 4–5 in a grudge match in which each competitor wagered $100.[17]

In 2018, Ahgren organized a $1000 winner-take-all invitational Melee netplay tournament titled the Ludwig Ahgren Championship Series, which was won by Counter Logic Gaming's SFAT.[18] On April 13, 2020, Ahgren announced a successor to the first Ludwig Ahgren Championship Series titled, Worldwide Ludwig Ahgren Championship Series[19], later renamed to Ludwig Ahgren Championship Series 2. First announced to feature tournaments on the east and west coasts of the United States, it was later reaannounced on June 30, 2020 as a single tournament with at least ten top players being automaticly entered into the event. Two qualification tournaments are being held where the top 24 entrants from each tournaments will be entered into the event.[20][21] With an announced minimum prize pool of $15,000, Ludwig Ahgren Championship Series 2 will have the largest prize pot of any Melee netplay tournament,[22] and tied for the 28th Melee largest prize pool of all time.[23]

Streaming career

Ludwig Ahgren is a very well known streamer on the streaming platform Twitch, he is well known for in his twitch chat for being short (normal height) having acne (having normal skin for his age) and not doing his taxes, he started streaming 2 years ago on twitch, his following started to grow in late 2019 and he blew up in early 2020, ludwig has used his fame to collaborate with well known Twitch streamers and Youtubers such as Jschlatt, Disguised Toast, and CallMeCarson along with a plethra of others. Ahgren began streaming part-time on May 16, 2018.[24] While streaming part-time, Ahgren worked various jobs around the Los Angeles area such as a marketing team member at Chinese vape company, IQ Vapes, and as customer support for Apple. After disclosing to his live stream audience that he had quit his job at Apple, (later admitting over a year later that he was actually fired), he dedicated himself to streaming full-time as a career. Ahgren's stream began to gain traction in the fall of 2019 after he began uploading a playthrough of Pokémon Black 2 to his YouTube channel where he would name each Pokémon he caught in game after a member of in his channel's chat, which attracted a peak viewership of 4,926 on the day of the playthrough's completion.[25] The Pokémon streams are characteristic of his style of live stream, as many have historically revolved around viewer engagement, such as viewer talent shows[26][27] and art contests.[28] One of his most popular streams that he titles an "Amazon Stream", a stream in which viewers submit items on Amazon for him to purchase, has lead to viewers submitting NSFW content.[29] Ahgren's YouTube channel began growing in popularity after he began uploading highlights from his stream's Pokémon content, along with speedruns of Super Mario 64, playthroughs of Poly Bridge, Super Monkey Ball and other video games. Viewers who discovered Ahgren through YouTube began tuning into his Twitch streams, and Ahgren attributes his success to his increased amount of YouTube uploads.[30] Slowly, his streams began increasing in viewership, along with his subscriber count. As of June 19th, 2020, Ahgren has one of the top 20 most subscribed channels on all of Twitch.[31] Ahgren's Twitch stream's former career high of 15,973 concurrent viewers and 30,185 unique viewers on a stream on April 13, 2020 where he shaved his head[32] was overcame on June 19 2020 when Ahgren hit over 72,000 concurrent viewers on a stream where he was in the Finals of the consolation bracket of the Chess.com PogChamps tournament after the Chess.com stream crashed and he was raided by the channel.[33]

Ahgren and a few other Melee competitors and personalities, including Mew2King and Plup, were invited by 2016 Pokémon World Champion[34] Wolfe Glick to compete in an invitational tournament for Pokémon Sword and Shield,[35] where he would end up winning the entire event.[36][37] Ahgren also won an invitational tournament organized by Americas Cardroom to crown the 'King of Twitch Poker', defeating Mang0 and Destiny in the process.[38][39]

In November of 2019, Ahgren appeared in a Christmas themed advertisement for Micro-Star International promoting the RTX 20 Series graphics card.[40] Ahgren later stated that the advertisement was filmed in the house he lives in with friends Anthony, Nick, Garrett, Aiden, and Blair. This was not the first advertisement that Ahgren had stared in, as he had previously portrayed himself in an advertisement for Hotels.com in 2018.[41]

In 2019, Ahgren launched the Mogul Moves line of clothing. While mainly selling sweatshirts and hoodies, most displaying the phrase "Mogul Moves" in varsity font, Ahgren in the past has organized contests where his viewers create designs for him to sell on T-shirts and stickers, with the creators of the winning designs earning a portion of the profits.[42] For the Melee tournament GENESIS 7, Ahgren signed Melee player Zain "Zain" Naghmi to a short-term deal where Zain would wear a recently released Mogul Moves sweatshirt at the event.[43] Ahgren promised his viewers that if Zain won the entire event that he would release a limited edition bomber jacket. On the final day of competition in the Paramount Theatre in Oakland, California, Zain defeated Hungrybox to win the entire event,[44] and Ahgren ended up releasing the bomber jacket shortly after. It was reported by close friends of Ahgren, Brandon Ewing and Nathan Stanz, the general manager of esports organization Gen.G, on their podcast, Esportsmanlike Conduct, that Ahgren sold $100,000 of merchandise on May 10, 2020, when his release of Mogul Moves merchandise sold out in just over thirty minutes.[45]

In March of 2020, Ahgren announced that Youtooz would be creating a limited edition vinyl figure of him.[46] The figure is shown sporting his Gucci slides which he has since lost in a bet. While being scheduled to ship in May of 2020, a number were manufactured with an incorrect shade of blue on the figure's shorts, which pushed back the shipping to June of 2020. The aforementioned shorts are based off of Ahgren's women's shorts that he purchased for a cosplay of Misty from the Pokémon franchise.

In June of 2020, Ahgren was invited to compete in the chess tournament PogChamps ran by Chess.com. Commentated by chess Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura and Woman FIDE Master Alexandra Botez,[47] Ahgren went 1-2 in the qualifying matches. with losses to American streamer Albert "BoxBox" Zheng[48] and German streamer Kevin "Papaplatte" Teller.[49] Ahgren's only win in the qualifying matches was against American streamer Joseph "Swiftor" Alminawi.[50] After his loss to Zheng, Ahgren played him in a match of blindfold chess ending in a draw. Hikaru Nakamura told Ahgren that he played better blindfolded than when he was able to see his pieces.[51] During his match with Teller, Ahgren claimed that Nakamura told him to play the Latvian Gambit, later finding out that he misread his advice.[52] In the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket, Ahgren defeated Canadian streamer Janet "xChocoBars" Rose 2-0. In between his matches with Teller and Alminawi, Ahgren purchased Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual, an extremely advanced chess manual written by International Master Mark Dvoretsky. Ahgren credits his strong endgame performance against Rose to the book, although stating that he had not completed it yet.[53] On June 17, 2020, Ahgren commentated two matches for the tournament, including one between Félix "xQc" Lengyel and Leslie "Fuslie" Fu, where Lengyel defeated Fu.[54] The next day he commentated the tournament with Grandmaster Robert Hess, calling two matches again, including one between Zheng and Joedat "Voyboy" Esfahani.[55] Ahgren went on to defeat Lengyel 2-1 in the semifinals[56] but went on to lose to Charlie "Cr1tikal" White in the finals with a score of 1-2. During his second match against White, Chess.com's Twitch stream crashed and Ahgren's stream accumulated 72,000+ viewers simultaneously as viewers went to watch the final matches.[57]
