The lynching of Wollo University professors was an extrajudicial killing that took place in Dessie in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia during the Tigray War, on 22 October 2021.
Lynching[edit]
The Amhara fano (militia) organised a mob to publicly lynch Wollo University professors Birhanu Gidey and Haile Habenom because of their Tigrayan origin. The lynching occurred in Dessie (Amhara region), the town where the university campus is located, on 22 October 2021.[1][2] The lynching occurred in a context of progression of the Tigray Defence Forces towards Dessie, after they reverted the ENDF’s 2021 Tigray offensive.[3] Earlier on, lists of Wollo University staff of Tigrayan origin had been circulated.[4]
Perpetrators[edit]
Tghat reported the perpetrators of this massacre as being Amhara fano vigilante group.[2]
Victims[edit]
Both victims have been identified as:[2]
- Birhanu Gidey, MSc,[5] Assistant Professor of Sport science at Wollo University
- Haile Habenom Anteneh, MSc,[6] Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Wollo University
Reactions[edit]
No reactions from the academic authorities of Wollo University are known.
After months of denial by the Ethiopian authorities that massacres occurred during the Tigray War, a joint investigation by OHCHR and the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission was announced in March 2021. [7] In September 2021, in a preliminary briefing in relation to this investigation, UNHRC Chief Michelle Bachelet mentioned that gross violations of human rights, humanitarian and refugee law have been observed in Tigray.[8]
