M/I Homes, Inc. is a new construction home builder that was founded in 1976 in Columbus, Ohio by Melvin and Irving Schottenstein. The corporate office is located in Columbus, Ohio, and the national home builder operates in 16 markets in the U.S. M/I Homes ranks 13th on the Builder 100 list (as of 2020).

Founded in 1976 by cousins, Melvin and Irving Shottenstein,[1] the company grew to become number one in the Columbus market by 1979. During the 1980s they expanded into 6 new markets in Florida, North Carolina, Ohio, and Indiana.

Beginning in 1981[2] with the expansion into Tampa, FL. Three years later M/I homes moved into Orlando in 1984,[3] followed quickly in 1985[4] with an entrance into Charlotte, 1986[5]'s entrance to Raleigh, and a double expansion in 1988 into Cincinnati[6] and Indianapolis.[7]

Prospering in 7 markets, M/I Homes went|public in 1993.[8]

Acquisition and expansion has framed the 21st century for M/I Homes. In 2007[9] they expanded to Chicago, IL. 2010[10] brought the expansion into Houston, TX, followed in 2011[11] with an expansion into San Antonio. Furthering their footprint in Texas, M/I expanded to Austin in 2012[12] and Dallas/ Fort Worth in 2013.[13]

In 2015,[14] M/I Homes purchases Hans Hagen Homes to expand into Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN. The following year, 2016,[15] M/I launched in Sarasota, FL. In 2018[16] M/I expanded into Detroit, MI through the acquisition of Pinnacle Homes.

As of November 2021, M/I announced the expansion into the Nashville, TN market.
