The March 2011 Sanriku earthquake was an earthquake that occurred around 11:45 JST on 9 March 2011 (JST). A tsunami advisory was issued from Aomori Prefecture to the Pacific coast of Fukushima Prefecture, and a 55 cm tsunami was observed at Ofunato. It is thought to be a foreshock of the Tohoku-Pacific Ocean Earthquake ( Mw 9.0) that occurred two days later on 11 March.[2]
Overview[edit]
The epicentre was 38°19'42"N, 143°16'42"E at a depth of 8 km, and occurred at the boundary between the subducting Pacific plate and the North American plate. There was an M7.0 earthquake on January 19, 1981, in the northwest direction of the epicentre. Also, the main slip was in a region deeper than the epicentre.

At Ofunato, the first wave (13 cm) was observed as an undertow at 12:03, and the maximum wave (55 cm) was observed at 12:16.
