Makro is a South African warehouse club distributing mainly branded consumer goods in the categories of food, liquor and general merchandise. Makro is a destination outlet attracting customers who are informed and professional and who demand comprehensive ranges, innovative merchandise, high service levels and best value deals within LSM 5 to 10. Its head offices are in the Massmart House in Sandton, City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality.

Makro was founded in 1971 and consist of 21 warehouse clubs[2] in South Africa trading in food, general merchandise and liquor. Makro Timeline is as follows:
- 1971 - Makro South Africa opened its Germiston store in Johannesburg to the public in 1971
- 1972 - Makro Milnerton store opens
- 1973 – Makro Rossburg store opens
- 1977 – Makro Amalgam store opens
- 1979 - Makro Pretoria West store opens and new Makro cards issued to customers
- 1987 – Makro Ottery store opens
- 1988 – Mark Lamberti appointed managing director
- 1991 - Makro Germiston, Springfield, PMB & Centurion stores open
- 1994 – Makro Woodmead store opens
- 1996 - Makro Port Elizabeth store opens and Mark Lamberti was appointed executive chairman of Massmart and from July 2003 CEO and deputy chairman of the board.
- 1999 – Gareth (Joe) Owens appointed Divisional Chief Executive of Makro
- 2001 - Makro introduced the SAP retail management system as well as the SAP datawarehouse, following the earlier introduction of the SAP financial module.
- 2004 – Makro Strubens Valley store open
- 2005 - Makro Wonderboom store opens and Kevin Vyvyan-Day joined Massmart as Divisional Chief Executive responsible for Makro and a member of the Massmart Executive Committee in 2005
- 2007 - Makro Silver Lakes and Vaal stores open and Grant Pattison was appointed CEO
- 2011 - Makro Polokwane, Nelspruit and Montague stores open and Walmart and Massmart Merger[3]was approved with Walmart owning 51% shares.
- 2012 – Makro Cape Gate and Bloemfontein store open. Makro Appoints Doug Jones as Divisional Managing Director in September 2012, and joined the Massmart Executive Committee at the same time.
- 2013 - Makro Alberton, Johannesburg store opens
- 2014 – Makro launch their e-commerce platform
- 2016 - Makro Carnival, Johannesburg store opens
- 2017 - Makro Riversands[4][5], Johannesburg store opens
