Maria Hill is a fictional character portrayed by Cobie Smulders in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film franchise, based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name.

As of January 2022, Hill has appeared in six of twenty-five MCU films in supporting roles, beginning with The Avengers, in 2012, and most recently appearing in Spider-Man: Far From Home, in 2019. She has also appeared in three television series including the Marvel Television series, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Phase Four series, What If...?. She is set to reappear in the Phase Five series, Secret Invasion.

Casting and characterization[edit]

Maria Hill first appeared in The New Avengers #4 (March 2005), and was created by Brian Michael Bendis and David Finch.[1] Cobie Smulders, whom Joss Whedon once considered for his unproduced live-action Wonder Woman film, was selected from a short list of potential actresses including Morena Baccarin. Smulders' deal would integrate her into nine films.[2][3] In February 2011, Cobie Smulders was cast in the role of Maria Hill, after participating in screen tests conducted by Marvel for the role of a key S.H.I.E.L.D. member, who Samuel L. Jackson described as Nick Fury's sidekick.[3][2]

Regarding her preparation for the film The Avengers, Smulders said, "I hired this amazing black-ops trainer to teach me how to hold a gun, take me to a shooting range, how to hit, how to hold myself, how to walk and basically how to look. I don't do a ton of fighting in the movie, which is why I wasn't offered a trainer, but I wanted to look like I had the ability to."[4] On relating to the character, Smulders said, "I can relate to her being a mom and being a businesswoman and trying to work full-time and raising a family and having a career. We're asked to do a lot of things these days. I feel she is just all about her job and keeping things going."[5]

Smulders said she performed some of her own stunts in the film Captain America: The Winter Soldier, explaining, "I try to do my own stunts whenever I can. You're only allowed to do certain stunts. There is an amazing team of stunt people that do most of the work in this film. But, I studied a lot of tae kwon do. I also did a lot of training just with weapons because I'm not very comfortable around guns. I had to get comfortable because that's my character's thing... I like to get really physical so I feel empowered when I am on set and even though you don't see it on screen, maybe I am taking people out that you don't see off camera."[6]

Describing Hill's situation in the film Avengers: Age of Ultron, Smulders said that after The Winter Soldier, Hill does not "really know who's a good guy and who's a bad guy and she's trying to figure out that throughout this film." She added, "She's not getting any sleep. She's doing all the work. She doesn't have the kind of manpower that she had in S.H.I.E.L.D.,"[7] instead working for Tony Stark at the Avenger's headquarters "trying to keep everything running as smoothly as possible [...] it's an entirely different vibe for her."[8]

Suddenly Hill and Fury became one of the trillions killed in the Blip.[11]

Five years later in 2023, Hill was resurrected as Bruce Banner had successfully used the Nano Gauntlet to bring back everyone who died in the Blip. In the wake of her resurrection, she was present at Tony Stark's funeral, as he sacrificed himself during the Battle of Earth to defeat Thanos. Foster objects to any sort of S.H.I.E.L.D. intervention, Hill then summons Captain Marvel with Fury's pager. During Thor and Danvers' fight, Hill drops a nuclear bomb on both beings. Later Thor retrieves Mjolnir, ends the intergalactic party and sends all the aliens on Earth back to their realms.
