Markus Enders (born 2 September 1963) is a German philosopher and Catholic theologian. Since 2001, he has been the Professor of Christian Philosophy of Religion at the University of Freiburg.
Biography
Markus Enders was born on 2 September 1963 in Fulda,[1] a city in the German state of Hesse.
From 1983 until 1989, Markus Enders studied philosophy, Catholic theology, religious studies, Gräzistik (philology of Ancient Greek) and German studies in Freiburg im Breisgau.[1] During his studies, Enders was awarded a scholarship by Cusanuswerk. In 1988, Enders graduated in philosophy with a Magister Artium; a year later he received his Diplom in Catholic theology.
For his doctoral studies, Enders moved to Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, graduating summa cum laude in 1991 with a Doctor of Philosophy. His dissertation was titled "Das mystische Wissen bei Heinrich Seuse" (Mystical Knowledge in the Works of Henry Suso) and was supervised by Werner Beierwaltes. From 1992 until 1999, Enders held the position of wissenschaftlicher Assistent (postdoctoral researcher) at the Chair of Philosophy of Werner Beierwaltes. In 1997, he earned his Habilitation (Germany's highest university degree) with a work on Anselm of Canterbury's theory of Truth, taking into account Anselm's ancient sources: Aristotle, Cicero, Augustine and Boethius.[1]
Enders married his wife Hildegard in 1993. They have three children.
In 1999, Enders graduated summa cum laude with a Doctor of Theology.[1] In his second doctoral thesis, Enders investigated Martin Heidegger's conceptualization of transcendence and world within the context of the modern history of the concept of transcendence. He was supervised by Richard Heinzmann. From 1999 until 2001, Enders received the Heisenberg Scholarship from the German Research Foundation.
Enders declined an offer to become professor at the University of Fulda. Instead, he became full professor at the University of Freiburg in 2001,[2] holding the same chair as Bernhard Casper, Klaus Hemmerle and Bernhard Welte. In 2009, the Memorial University of Newfoundland appointed Enders adjunct professor (areas of specialization: philosophy of religion, ancient and medieval philosophy and German Mysticism). In 2013, Enders declined an offer to become professor at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt. In 2014/15, he was dean of the Faculty of Theology at the University of Freiburg.
In 2010, Enders, together with Rolf Kühn, founded the Forschungsstelle für jüngere französische Religionsphilosophie (Research Center for Contemporary French Philosophy of Religion),[2] which received Drittmittel (external research funding). In 2012, Enders became chairman of the Bernhard-Welte-Gesellschaft e. V. (Bernhard Welte Society). In 2017, he was granted full membership at the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities. There, he has co-directed the research group responsible for the edition of the Karl-Jaspers-Gesamtausgabe (the collected works of Karl Jaspers) since 2020. Enders has held and still holds memberships in numerous other academic societies.[1]
