Heritage listed Mill House (Centre Management Office)

Marrickville Metro is a sub-regional shopping centre located in the suburb of Marrickville in Sydney's Inner West. The centre is anchored by Aldi, Kmart and Woolworths in addition to 100 speciality stores.[1]

History[edit]

Marrickville Metro opened in 1987 on the site of Vicars Woollen Mill.[2] The external wall of the woollen mill has been preserved with the centre built in it. The old Mill House built in c.1860 is heritage listed and the Centre Management Office. It is one of the oldest surviving houses in Marrickville.[3][4] The centre featured Franklins, Kmart and Woolworths. Franklins was later converted to Franklins Big Fresh in 1992. The Franklins Big Fresh store closed in 2001 which was replaced by Aldi.[5][6]

Redevelopment[edit]

AMP Capital Shopping Centres has commenced a redevelopment of Marrickville Metro Shopping Centre, which will take place over three stages. This involves landscaping and facade works in the Victoria Road entry garden around the heritage Mill House (Centre Management Office). It will include an expansion to the site adjacent the centre with new retail building of approximately 10,000 sqm, with an additional supermarket, additional discount department store, food markets and additional specialty retail stores, as well as additional  parking above the retail building adjacent to the centre. Works are due to be completed in early 2017.[7][8]

Since then there were plans in 2010 and 2013 to expand the centre but it was rejected by the council. The group also offered $130,000 for the airspace above the street to build a walkway to link the Metro with an airbridgeover the site which will be redeveloped.[9][10]
