Southgate is a shopping centre in the suburb of Sylvania in the Sutherland Shire of Sydney.[1]

Transport[edit]

Southgate Shopping Centre has bus connections to St George and Sutherland Shire, as well as local surrounding suburbs. It is served by Veolia Transport. There is no railway station at Sylvania, the closest station is located at Miranda.

History[edit]

Southgate Shopping Centre was originally built on a vacant land adjoining the Sylvania Hotel.

Sylvania Hotel was originally a famous restaurant and nightclub known as Oyster Bill's which opened in 1930.[2] Oyster Bill's was set back from the road. The exotic cave-like structure had a fantasy grotto-style interior with a separate cabaret area at the rear which featured a pool surrounded by reproduction Grecian sculptures. The novel decor and isolated bush setting was known for where after hours drinking could take place away from the eyes police were all part of the Oyster Bill's. It was later handed it over to managers to run as it became a haunt for big time criminals and "colourful characters". When the owners regained control of the building in 1946 they renamed it Skelsey's. Skelsey's was sold for £36,000 ($72,000) to a group of five businessmen in 1950. In 1954 it was renamed to The Colony Club which then became Australia's largest nightclub. It had a total seating capacity for more than 1000 and featured two dance floors onto a beer garden and barbecue area, which provided an unusual setting for the swimming pool which was unique for a Sydney night club.

The Colony Club was demolished in the late 1950s to make way for the Sylvania Hotel. The Sylvania Hotel opened in 1959.[3]

In 1965 an open plan shopping centre known as Sylvania Shopping Centre opened on a vacant land adjoining the hotel. Sylvania Shopping Centre featured an AMF Bowling alley and 15 stores.

Plans for a new shopping centre was announced in January 1980, however residents and shopkeepers in the existing shopping centre were not happy with the proposal. The residents and shopkeepers were concerned about traffic and were afraid they will lose the village atmosphere and the worth of a big development in the middle of a residential area.

The existing shopping centre apart from the bowling alley and Sylvania Hotel was demolished. The bowling alley and Sylvania Hotel (which was renamed to The Crest Hotel Sylvania) continued trading during the development.

Southgate Shopping Centre opened on 2 May 1983 and featured Kmart, Coles New World and 50 specialty shops. It also featured more than 1100 car parking spaces. During the first week of the opening Col Joye and the Joy Boys and Humphrey B. Bear performed on stage during Thursday night shopping.[4]

A few weeks after the shopping centre opening, Bill Collins who is well known as Mr Movies turned groundbreaking for construction of a $3 million Village cinema complex. Village Sylvania officially opened in December 1983. The three screen Village cinemas was opened by then Premier Neville Wran. However Village Sylvania closed down in the 1990s and the building has been converted into a Fitness First gym and learn-to-swim pool.[5]

ISPT Super Property acquired Southgate Shopping Centre in February 1998. The centre underwent redevelopment in 1999 and included a Franklins Big Fresh supermarket and the upgrade and reconfiguration of the existing stores and food court.[6] In 2001, the Franklins Big Fresh supermarket closed and was replaced by Woolworths supermarket.

On February 2011, Southgate Shopping Centre underwent a redevelopment and included new stores including First Choice Liquor, new exterior sign and new facade. The development concluded in early 2012.[7]

Future[edit]

On 28 August 2014 plans for Southgate Shopping Centre for a major redevelopment in the future after the owner's purchase of the adjoining Crest Hotel for $19.2 million. The expansion will include extra levels on the existing shopping centre after the building height was increased from 13 metres to 16 metres in the Sutherland Shire draft local environmental plan.[8][9]

Tenants[edit]

Southgate has 23,676m² of floor space. The major retailers include Kmart, Coles, Woolworths, Fitness First and Zone Bowling.
