Matt Cimaglia is an American entrepreneur and creative director.[1]
Background[edit]
At the age of four, his family got their first personal computer, an IBM PCjr, leading Cimaglia to become immediately fascinated by new technology and multimedia.[2] He soon started making his own short videos and spent much of his free time experimenting and coding on his computer, leading him to win awards at the local and state level for student movies he produced while in elementary school. By 18, in his final year at Boca Raton Community High School, he was active in the student-run TV production program that he started, covering political events and at one point interviewing Governor Jeb Bush.[3][4][5]
Business ventures[edit]
At age 20, after graduating from college, Cimaglia started his own production company, Cimaglia Productions, in a Universal Studios backlot[6] and soon landed a contract with NBC Network News. He began editing and producing segments for The Today Show and Dateline NBC, expanding to work for the American Broadcasting Company on programs such as Good Morning America and ABC World News Tonight.[7]
By 2006, Cimaglia had moved his head office to Chicago’s John Hancock Center,[8] continuing to operate a satellite office out of Florida. In Chicago, he began working for large brands including Allstate, Citadel LLC and OptionsXpress by the Charles Schwab Corporation, as well as international companies such as Lavazza, Mercedes-Benz and Ogilvy (agency), among others.[9][10]
In 2008, Cimaglia shared a News & Documentary Emmy Awards nomination for co-producing a series on NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams called “Thirsty Planet”.[11] In 2010, Cimaglia Productions became one of the first mid-sized production companies in the world to deploy the Avid Technology ISIS 5000 real-time shared storage solution.[12]
By 2012, Cimaglia had doubled Cimaglia Productions’ size every year for five years and began making TV media appearances as an expert panelist discussing the intersection of entrepreneurship, politics and the economy.[13][14] In 2016, Cimaglia exited his company, feeling compelled to refocus his agency model on agility and new technologies.[6][15] One project involved recording visual artists such as Lino Tagliapietra in 360-degree video to provide insight into their creative process.[16][17] He also began contributing to Entrepreneur[18] and Forbes,[19] and consulting for large corporations and advertising agencies.[20]
In 2019, he started Third Summit, a company that builds and invests in companies that help content creators and small businesses compete with larger multinational agencies and studios. Third Summit’s flagship product is Alteon.io, a comprehensive content management system for content creators.[21] [22] Cimaglia designed Alteon based on his two decades spent in the creative industry, finding business partners in IBM,[2] Teradek [23] and Vidispine.[24] Cimaglia hired renowned agency Lexicon Branding to create the name.[25] In July 2021, Cimaglia hired Yusuf Ozturk as the chief technology officer for Third Summit, after Ozturk had spent more than seven years as the chief technology officer at Rand McNally.[26] Alteon is also poised to become the first-ever content-management system that publishes directly to blockchains.[27]
Philanthropy[edit]
Cimaglia has been active in the local art scene in every city he’s lived in. He has been a junior associate of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City[28] and a member of the Auxiliary Board of the Art Institute of Chicago,[29] and is currently a board member at the Boca Raton Center for Arts & Innovation, an upcoming $100-million venue in Mizner Park.[30] He has also worked pro bono for several charitable institutions, including the Junior League of Chicago, for which he produced a centennial celebration video,[31] and the Greater Chicago Food Depository.[32]
Personal life[edit]
Cimaglia currently spends a majority of his time in Florida with his family and partner, mixed-media artist Kristin Simmons, while also doing business in New York City. An avid competitive cyclist[33] and traveler, he has also trekked to Mount Everest Base Camp in 2011, though he fell ill with Khumbu cough.[34]
