Md Asiful Islam

Md Asiful Islam (born 11 March 1989) a Bangladeshi origin medical science researcher is currently working as a Senior Lecturer (equivalent to associate professor in the North American system) of Haematology at the Universiti Sains Malaysia.[1][2]

Education[edit]

Dr Asiful completed his BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh in 2011.[3] Soon after, he secured a PhD position at the Human Genome Centre, Universiti Sains Malaysia and completed his PhD in Molecular Genetics and Antiphospholipid syndrome in 2018.[2][3]

Research[edit]

He has an extensive expertise in conducting meta-analysis and has published 68 journal articles including 18 systematic reviews and meta-analyses in cross-disciplines of Biomedical Sciences including Immunology, Haematology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Oncology, Pharmacology, Neuroscience, Microbiology and Otorhinolaryngology.[4][2][3]

COVID-19 research contributions[edit]

One of Dr Asiful's research was highlighted in the Malaysian daily newspaper 'The Star' on COVID-19 and smell dysfunction.[5] During the COVID-19 pandemic, he published five journal articles on the prevalence and characteristics of fever,[6] headache,[7] loss of smell,[8] and taste[9] and diagnostic accuracy of rapid antigen test kits to detect SARS-CoV-2.[10]
