Mia von Steinkirch (born August 18, 1993), alias bt3gl, is an italian-brazilian physicist and security hacker. She is known for her contributions on Theoretical Physics,[1] Astrophysics,[2] Quantum Information,[3] Computer Security,[4] and Blockchain technologies.[5]

Education and early work[edit]

She grew up in Brazil and started coding at a very early age, publishing one of the first Brazilian websites with open-source references on Computer Language, Expert Systems, and Fractals.[6] In high school, she won first place at the Brazilian Science and Fair Technology for her Artificial Intelligence project written in Delphi (software).[7]

She graduated with a bachelor's degree in Physics from the University of Sao Paulo, with a scholarship from the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development to research Cosmology (the equations of Dark Matter and Dark Energy). [8][9] She was an undergraduate summer researcher at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, in Washington DC, studying Active Galactic Nuclei, under the supervision of Prof. Duília de Mello.[10]

She received her Ph.D. in Astrophysics from Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, NY. [11] While a student, she published research at the Brookhaven National Laboratory about jets in Quark–gluon plasma, for the PHENIX detector in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, under the supervision of Prof. Barbara Jacak. [12] Later, she was a research scholar at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, where she developed Monte Carlo Simulation for Neutron Stars, under the supervision of Prof. James Lattimer. [13] She received several scholarships while in school, including from the American Astronomical Society and CERN Winter School. While a student, she published dozens of whitepapers and articles in Machine Learning, Algorithms, Astrophysics, Computer Security, and Phenomenology (physics).[14] [15] Her book in Group Theory for Physicists is broadly used in several Physics graduate programs worldwide. [16] In 2014, she published one of the first books on Python and Algorithms at Hanbit Media.[17]

Software[edit]

From 2015 to 2017, she worked as a software engineer and security hacker at Yelp, Etsy, and Apple. At Apple, she was at Ivan Krstić's team.

In 2018, she left her full-time position to found Curiee, a non-profit to teach quantum computing to software engineers.[18]

In 2020, she was the Head of Blockchain Engineering at Shopify, one of that team's founders. Since then, she has been an active White hat (computer security) researcher and developer in the blockchain community.[19]

Other activities and recognition[edit]

She is an active member of the DEF CON community. She gave a talk about "Hacking Quantum Cryptography" in the debut year of DEF CON's cryptovillage. [20]

In 2021, she co-founded MidsummerDAO and later FilmmakerDAO,[21] presenting a theoretical model to reward artists in the film production industry.[22]

She is a photographer and her work has been featured over dozens of publishings.[23] Her token, $MIA, is the most popular token for a woman at the Talent Protocol network.[24]
