Michael A. Baston (born April 12, 1972) is a contributing writer for news publications, business and law professor, and faculty development advisor. He currently serves as the 7th president of Rockland Community College. [1] He is also a former higher education, non-profit, and religious corporations attorney.

EDUCATION[edit]

Baston attended Iona College where he received a B.A. in Political Science. [2] He then attended Brooklyn Law School to receive his J.D. before receiving his Ed.D. in Executive Leadership from St. John Fisher College.[3]

BUSINESS AND LAW CAREER[edit]

Dr. Baston’s career started in public interest law, where he represented educational institutions including postsecondary institutions, not-for-profit organizations and religious associations before courts and administrative agencies throughout the State of New York. [4] After graduating from Brooklyn Law School with his J.D. and passing the New York State Bar, he worked in New York City for Dougherty & Associates as Senior Associate. [5] He has also taught business law, paralegal studies, legal research and writing, employment law, criminal law and family law as an Adjunct Lecturer for Berkeley College, Assistant Professor at LaGuardia Community College, and Adjunct Professor at Rockland Community College. [6] [7] As a professor of business and legal studies, he was able to interact more personally with students, and realized his true calling.

HIGHER EDUCATION CAREER[edit]

At Berkeley College, Baston began delving into enhancing the student experience through his work as the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and later as the Dean of Student Development and Campus Life. [8] After Berkeley College, Baston continued his administrative career at LaGuardia Community College where he worked his way from Associate Dean to Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment. [9] Throughout his career, Baston has been dedicated to providing equal opportunity to education, promoting the importance of support services, and improving the student experience. In 2017, Baston became the 7th president of Rockland Community College.[10] Additionally, he is a national Guided Pathways coach with the American Association of Community Colleges where shares his extensive research with the goal of helping students to complete their educational journey. [11] He travels throughout the country to assist community colleges in the integration of the Guided Pathways student success initiative. Most recently, he has become a Faculty Advisor for the Aspen Institute’s College Excellence Program New President's Fellowship. [12]
