Mike Krumlauf is an American independent filmmaker and Cinematographer best known for his video art on Vimeo & his feature debut A Place to Call His Own which is a documentary about his late friend Matthew McMahon from Naperville, Illinois.
Life & Career
Mike grew up in Naperville, Illinois, the majority of his life, spending a year and a half in Telluride, Colorado, from late 2001-2003. Mike's passion for film began when his father gave him a video camera as a Christmas gift in 1999. In 2003, Mike was introduced to low budget DV filmmaking and the Sony DSR-PD150 camera. He began teaching himself digital cinematography and editing, while constantly experimenting. In 2005, Mike met filmmaker Arin Crumley and acquired the beloved (among low budget filmmakers at the time) Panasonic DVX100A camera. Arin insisted that Mike put his video artwork on a new (at the time) website, YouTube.com. In doing so, Mike was one of the first to use the website as a DIY distribution tool for video art, which gained him a little notoriety in the online film-making community. From 2005-2007, Mike received over 1 million views collectively for his work of about 130 videos at the time. His early work was considered as "Photography on Speed," said by a fellow Chicago photographer, Dann Wunderlich. In late 2007, Mike left YouTube.com and the online filmmaking community. It was not until February 2008, when Mike went back to the internet, in which he came out publicly as a gay man and began putting his work on Vimeo.com (where he still posts his work to this day). His experimental work today gains 200-500 views a week. "I enjoy being on Vimeo more than I did YouTube or other outlets. Vimeo has a very artistically driven community of people who can respect my work for what it is... experiments," states Krumlauf. "My video art will be an ongoing project until the day I die. It's a great way for me to better understand my calling as an artist and fine tune my craft."
As of May 2014, Mike has completed his first feature length film, A Place to Call His Own, which tells the story of his late friend Matthew McMahon and the impact he left on his family & Mike. The film received praise in rough cut form at the 2013 Naperville Independent Film Festival, getting the largest turn out at the festival. The Chicago Sun-Times is quoted saying, "..Krumlauf's voice has something special to say".
Mike's future plans as an artist is to work in music videos and experimental art-house cinema. Mike is attending Tribeca Flashpoint Media Arts Academy from 2014-2016 with a focus in Cinematography. He hopes to expand his company, Digital T Productions, into one of the leading independent film production and distribution houses in Chicago.
