MinerGate is one of the largest multicurrency mining pools.[1], where users join resources to get a share of profits[2]. The project was started in 2014 by a group of blockchain enthusiasts, led by Claude Lecomte. MinerGate operates with 10 coins and supports 4 major mining algorithms[3].
Business model
MinerGate is the first pool that allowed users to mine various cryptocurrencies without lowering the hash rate for the major coin[4].
To start mining on MinerGate, a user must authenticate his or her email address and create a secure password. After that, he or she can download the right version of the software (for Mac/Windows/Linux). Users can also mine cryptocurrencies directly on the website without downloading extra software.
MinerGate is a unique project as it allows mining different coins at the same time without a decrease in the hashrate. It is considered one of the easiest options for inexperienced users to start mining cryptocurrencies.
MinerGate also has an app called MinerGate Mobile Miner[5] that provides a built-in wallet alongside an opportunity to mine various cryptocurrencies[6][7]
Controversies
In July 2018, Google updated its policies concerning certain crypto apps and decided to remove on-device cryptocurrency mining apps from the Play Store[8]. To comply with the new rules, MinerGate removed the on-device mining function from the app, leaving only the possibility to manage remote cloud mining. Despite that, the app with 1 million downloads became unavailable for Android users.[9]
