Momo Wang (Chinese: 王卯卯; born 1985) is a film director, animator, cartoonist, and artist. She is the creator of Tuzki, a popular illustrated bunny character. Wang is also the writer and director of Penglai, an animated film produced by Illumination Entertainment.
In 2022, Wang was inducted into the Asian Hall of Fame for her trailblazing creative and animated work..[1].
Early life[edit]
Wang was born in Tianjin, China and raised in Beijing, China. She spent her childhood immersed in comic books and animation.
Wang attended the Communication University of China and earned her bachelor’s degree in fine arts.
Career[edit]
Wang began her professional career in 2006. While attending university she created the cartoon character Tuzki (Chinese: 兔斯基; Pinyin: Tùsījī). Tuzki first became popular through Wang’s personal blog and grew in fame through licensing deals as emoticons on Tencent QQ and MSN messenger, as well as through sponsorships with Motorola and Greenpeace, among others[2][3][4].
Wang sold Tuzki to Time-Warner in 2008 and moved to their Hong Kong headquarters to oversee Tuzki’s brand growth into merchandise, restaurants, TV, and film[5][6]. While at Time-Warner, Wang also worked as a creative director in the Cartoon Network division.
Wang moved to Los Angeles in 2011 to earn her master of fine arts degree (MFA) in experimental animation from the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in 2014.
Upon graduation, she founded Studio 123, an animation and creative studio based in Los Angeles. She later joined Illumination Entertainment as an animation and creative director to work on the company’s film franchises including Minions, Despicable Me, and Sing.
Wang is the author of numerous best-selling books, comics, and graphic novels in China and across Asia including I,Tuzki, U?, the Momo Who? series, and The Best of You is Yet to Come[7].
She also collaborates with global brands including Apple, Gap, Vans, Tencent, and CryptoKitties on content and fashion projects[8][9][10].
In 2020, Wang created the Momo Wang Scholarship at CalArts to support international students[11]
Wang is the animation director for the music video Turn Up The Sunshine by Diana Ross and Tame Impala[12]
She also wrote and directed Penglai, an animated short film released in 2022 and narrated by Scarlett Johansson, and produced by Illumination Entertainment.
