The Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar)[10][11] (abbr. NCP (SP)) is a socialist political party based primarily in the states of Maharashtra and Kerela.[12][13] The Nationalist Congress Party was formed on 1999, by Sharad Pawar after he was expelled from the Indian National Congress. In July 2023, split occurred when Sharad Pawar's nephew Ajit Pawar along with his faction joined the National Democratic Alliance government, however, all MPs except two are[1][14] expected to remain loyal to Sharad Pawar. On 7th February 2024, Indian Election Commission approved Nationalist Congress Party-Sharadchandra Pawar and also sought a ‘The Rising Sun Wheel and Tractor’ as its election symbol.[15][16]
Party leadership[edit]
The party's primary base is the state of Maharashtra and its leadership reflects that. Since the 1980s, Indian politics has become more dynastic, possibly due to the absence of a party organization, independent civil society associations that mobilize support for the party, and centralized financing of elections.[17] This phenomenon is seen from the national level down to the district level. In that regard, the NCP is considered the party with the highest level of dynasticism in Indian politics.[18] The party founder, Sharad Pawar has many members of his family such as his daughter Supriya Sule and nephew Ajit Pawar holding prominent positions in the party.
