Natrayat Charans

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Natrayat Charans, or Asuda Charans, are a Hindu caste found in the state of Rajasthan in India.

History and origin[edit]

The community derives its name from the word nata, which means widow remarriage in native Rajasthani. This practice, initially adopted by a group of Jalori and Sachori Charans in Rajasthan, led to their separation from the wider Charan community, which disallows widow remarriage. In time, other Charans who once contracted Nata and thus became out-caste, joined the Natrayats.[1]

Culture & traditions[edit]

The Asuda Charans also practiced polygyny (keeping multiple wives). They were considered akin to Rajputs in their customs. The women strictly followed purdah and were often also said to be literate.[2]
