Neurotechnology UAB is a Lithuanian[3][4] research and development company specialising in neural networks and artificial intelligence.

History[edit]

The company was founded in Vilnius, Lithuania in 1990.[5]

Neurotechnology UAB was the focus of global media attention when one of their products, VeriFinger, was used by a German hacker to replicate the fingerprint of German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen in 2014.[6][7][8][9] Subsequently, it has been claimed that von der Leyen was the “world’s first thumbprint-hacking victim”.[10] Despite the controversies, VeriFinger has been regularly independently accredited as one of the most reliable real-world fingerprint recognition systems[11][12] and is often used by researchers in related disciplines.[13][14]

Products and Technologies[edit]

Following the integration with the Modular Open Source Identity Platform (MOSIP), the Neurotechnology MegaMatcher ABIS and SDK became eligible for deployment within MOSIP-based identity projects including biometric passports, voter registration, border control, law enforcement and social services.[15][16] Examples of voter registration projects that Neurotechnology have undertaken include:

  • India’s Aadhaar ID scheme[17][18]
  • Ghanian general elections[19]
  • DR Congo Voter Registration[20][21]
  • Mexican Tax Collection Agency digital identification system[22]

In June 2017, the company released an early prototype of a 3D printer that used ultrasonic particle manipulation.[23][24][25][26]

Concerns have also been raised regarding whether the accuracy of the Neurotechnology UAB VeriEye iris recognition system could be used to fool eye-scanners with reverse engineered irises.[27][28]
